Club Sailing

A mid-range easterly provided entertaining conditions for last Wednesday evening's race. A choppy sea and plenty of whitecaps promised a challenging sail, but in fact the wind was not as strong as it appeared and all the boats enjoyed a splashing time, with no turning over! At the start, Danny in the Streaker and the Osprey of Ted and Matt were on the line and they got away first, punching through the waves towards the windward mark at Monkstone. All boats chose to get under the cliffs to minimise the effect of the outgoing tide. The conditions suited the Ospreys and at the windward mark it was Ted and Matt from Paul and Steve, then Bill and Nan in their Redwing. Up went the spinnakers for the downwind ride and after three enjoyable laps that remained the finishing order. Sunday was a beautiful summer's day, with a declining easterly blowing for the penultimate Sunday in the club's summer series. Eight boats contested the racing, five Ospreys, a Redwing, a Streaker and a Flying Dutchman, over courses laid by Richard Johns. The first was triangular with an upwind start out into the bay, then left towards Monkstone and left again back to the start. This first race was part of 'Bart's Bash', a fundraising national race in support of the Andrew Simpson Foundation. On the first beat, Ted and Matt got away and established a lead they built on to the end. Behind them, Dyfan and guest crew Alastair gave a hint of things to come by taking second, not far ahead of Jaime and Hanna, all in Ospreys. It looks like the old order may be changing! In the second windward leeward race over a smaller course and with lighter wind, Ted and Matt again got to the windward mark first and, sailing angles on the run established a lead they kept to the end. Mike and Deanna in their Osprey took second and Bill and Ieuan in the Redwing third.

Cruisers

Only Blake in Slipstream appeared for the last scheduled cruiser race on Sunday, so he motored around to Saundersfoot and joined in their Bart's Bash race at 4 pm. There were six cruisers and over 30 dinghies all in one race, a tremendous turnout. Blake was first cruiser, but an Optimist beat him over the line!

Junior sailing The easterly winds over the last few weeks have made normal sail training a little daunting.  We have mixed the sessions up with mackerel fishing, rib training and sailing in yachts. The last session on the water was last Wednesday.  The junior section (and indeed the whole club) is run by volunteers and we would like to thank the members who have helped during the season. In particular, we must thank the five instructors who have run every session - Blake Shaw, Sian May, Alistair Mackay, Howard Yeates and Matthew May.  In addition, Terry Evans has overseen the registration and BBQ's, with Karin Morris almost a permanent fixture in the kitchen. Chris Sleight is always on hand to drive the tractor and Alex Macdonald helping to get the dinghies ready. There are many others who have helped, but the above need a special mention for turning up for nearly all the 22 sessions.

Junior Party

Next Wednesday we will have a final get-together and junior party. Free food and drinks included. All those who have attended at any time this season are invited. Start time 6 pm. Darts

The long-awaited darts season starts this (Friday) evening when we are at home to the Evergreen, against whom we have a dismal record. Captain, Ruth Tebbutt, has great hopes after a summer's hard practice (not). Would all participants please note that expectations are high! Watch this space.
