Sailing

Wednesday evening's race took place in a declining northerly breeze, strong and gusty initially, but quite light by the end. Race officer Paul Redford sent the fleet off to North Highcliff buoy towards Caldey then back to Monkstone and home.

On the long run towards Caldey, Ted and Matt in their Osprey established a decent lead over the Redwing of Mike and Deanna, the two RS200s of Steve and Ieuan and Dan and Deryn, with Richard in the Laser bringing up the rear.

Coming back upwind against the tide the Osprey powered through the chop that caused the smaller boats some difficulty, to take the win with Redwing second, RSs third Steve and fourth Dan and Laser fifth.

Sunday racing clashed with the start of Coppet Week in Saundersfoot, and numbers were down accordingly. In glorious sailing weather, bright sunshine and a decent south-westerly breeze, the Redwing of Mike and Deanna won both races from the RS200 of Steve and Jasmine in races run by Richard and Jaime.

Cruisers

Saturday's race got away in a light wind with a course set around DZ2 and Woolhouse.

It was good to see John Griffiths back on the water with Tejeda and he sneaked away in his usual fashion. It was a slow broad reach to DZ2 with spinnakers in use. With wind slowly increasing, Tejeda reached the mark first and attempted to fly his spinnaker on the reach to Woolhouse buoy. Mike Stace in Sibling also did the same, but Blake Shaw in Slipstream spotted their problem and downed the sail before rounding DZ2.  This meant he was able to sail a better course to the next mark, an advantage of being behind!

Steve Lewis in Aries also had a few spinnaker problems and lost some time. There was then a long beat back to Tenby, but the wind held up to the end, giving a very enjoyable sail. On corrected time, Tejeda was first, then Slipstream, Aries and Sibling.

Although only four boats competed, a total of 16 sailors took part, helping to fill the bar later. We hope the other boats join in soon.

Saturday sailing

On Saturday afternoon it was great to see some of those that came to the Come and Try turning up to further their skills under the watchful eyes of Mark Dashfield, Mike, Jonathan, Roy Clayton and Blake. These sessions will continue throughout the season from 3 to 6 pm. Ring Mark on 01834 844918 or Blake on 07717842713 for more information.

Juniors

The weather was not too kind again. The wind was too strong at first, but abated to allow the best sailors on the water. The racing group had a fine sail coping with the conditions. Bethan particularly enjoyed her time on the trapeze of Carwyn's 420. The beginners had more tuition ashore. Let's hope they can get on the water next time. Many thanks to all the helpers again.
