Roland Squibbs
Life at the club was overshadowed this week by the sad and untimely death of former Commodore and stalwart racer Rolly Squibbs. Rolly's illness finally overcame him on Monday to the great sadness of his family and many friends. Rolly started sailing when a schoolboy and soon took up racing. He was a familiar sight over the years in his Redwing, then his Osprey and latterly in his cruiser, Beagle, which until her untimely death last year he sailed with his beloved Jane. It is testament to his strength of character that he was still racing in Beagle until recently. He will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with his parents Arthur and Nora and brother Crispin and family.
Juniors
The wind was too strong for on-the-water training last week, but the opportunity was taken to complete shore work so that a number of juniors were able to complete their Stage 2 and 3.
Tom Stubbs and Holly Macdonald gained Stage 3, Ross Laidlaw, Max Richards and Huw Richards gained Stage 2.
This week, the junior sailing programme was concluded for the year with a social at the club on Wednesday. It was much enjoyed by all present, who are looking forward already to next season.
Many thanks to all the parents and members who have helped out this season with tractor driving, boat rigging, launching, tuition, safety boat driving, BBQ's etc.
Cruiser racing
The final cruiser race was cancelled due to the fact that three of the regular fleet were being lifted out on Monday and had to get their masts down in readiness.
Sunday Sailing
The weather on Sunday was awful and no sailing took place. One of our Ospreys travelled to Neyland on Saturday and enjoyed a sunny, breezy afternoon at the Neyland club open meeting, eventually claiming second place in division one behind a local RS400.
Darts
Throughout the universe strange and incredible events take place. Friday evening witnessed one of these events. We won! - not a phrase we often use. Captain Terry Evans led by example by winning all his matches, as did Colin Parmenter and Ruth Tebbutt. Celebrations will no doubt continue throughout the week.
This (Friday) evening we are away to the Sun Inn, St Florence - another thorn in our flesh. Captain Terry Evans is on choral duties, so it will be up to vice-captain, Ruth Tebbutt, to bring the team back to earth after the euphoria of success.
Opening Hours
The club will now be open on Friday, Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes.
Weekly Draw
The 36th draw took place last Saturday - the owner of the winning ticket was not present, so tomorrow's draw is a rollover. The draw was independently verified by the draw master, Paul Redford. The next draw takes place tomorrow evening at 9 pm when the prize will be £80. Please note - you must be present and have your membership card with you to claim the prize!
