THE Tenby Observer recently celebrated five‑year‑old Rory Henshaw’s remarkable achievements — and at the weekend he added another milestone by completing his two rounds in the American Final of the US Kids Golf Tour at the Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort in Florida.
Rory, from Tenby, qualified thanks to a series of wins in his category, on the tour run by US Kids Golf across the UK
A Junior at Trefloyne Golf Club, he was a bit disappointed with his first round, scoring a gross 52 for the nine-hole course.
But he bounced back really well on the Sunday with a 46, for a final total of 26+ and 13th place, about a quarter of the way up the leader board.
Rory was possibly the youngest in his 6-and-under category, and when you’re just 5 years old and playing against boys who are going to turn 7 in a week or two, there’s inevitably a size difference.
They shoot up in height at that age, and longer legs and arms give them much more leverage with a golf club.
So unfortunately Rory found himself being outdriven by 30 yards and more, by the bigger boys. He was a match for most of them on and round the greens, but the difference in length proved to be a definite hurdle.
However, as he said after the game he’s had a really special experience, has learnt a lot and knows where he wants to improve his game, and is looking forward to putting on a few extra inches himself, in 2026.
He also repeated his thanks to everyone at home who supported him, financially and emotionally.
And it’s not over yet! Rory has just learnt that as well as the US finals, he’s qualified for the US Kids Golf European Championship in Scotland in May.
