Wednesday Sailing

Wednesday's race saw five boats come to the start in very light and warm conditions for the evening's points race. A suitably small triangular course was set, but the wind was so light and variable no true beat emerged.

At the start, John McKellor in his Comet was first away and sailed well in the difficult conditions until coming back uptide almost defeated the slower boat; Paul and Anthea were the only Osprey on the water and they finished first, but not far enough ahead to beat the Redwing of Mike and Deanna, who were first on corrected time, with the Osprey second and John in the Comet a very creditable third.

Danny in the Vareo was half a leg away at the start and never made up for this. Two GPs were on the water; Graham Done and family arrived by coach and filled theirs with people, a tactic that should have proved a handicap in the light conditions. In fact, they made good headway, resisting the challenge of Paul and Anne in the other GP.

Enterprise Nationals

The Enterprise Class arrived last Saturday and at the time of going to press was enjoying some excellent sailing. There will be a full report next week.

Junior Sailing

Sail training and BBQ as usual next Wednesday.

BBQ and Music

Tomorrow (Saturday) evening, members and friends will have the opportunity to partake in the universally acclaimed Terry Evans BBQ, followed by an evening of music. Music entertainment will be provided by a young member of the club, Emma Redford. Emma is intending to go to Glamorgan University to study popular music in September. Together with a guitarist, the duo will be performing a mixture of classic and modern numbers sure to get the joint jumping. Come on down and enjoy and have some fun.

The club will now be open on every evening and Sunday lunchtimes.

Weekly Draw

The 32nd draw took place last Saturday - the owner of the winning ticket was not present, so tomorrow's draw is a rollover. The draw was independently verified by the draw master, Paul Redford.

As mentioned, the next draw takes place tomorrow evening at 9 pm when the prize will be £170. Please note - you must be present and have your membership card with you to claim the prize!

Humour

A guy is driving around the back woods of Tennessee and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style house: 'Talking Dog for Sale'. He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard.

The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador Retriever sitting there. "You talk?" he asks. "Yep," the Lab replies.

After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says "So, what's your story?" The Lab looks up and says, "Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA and they had me sworn into the toughest branch of the armed services... the United States Marines ... You know one of their nicknames is 'The Devil Dogs'.

"In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders; because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running, but the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger, so I decided to settle down.

"I retired from the Corps (eight dog years is 56 Corps years) and signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in.

"I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals. I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired."

The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

"Ten dollars," the guy says. "Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?"

"Because he's a liar. He never did any of that stuff. He was a yacht captain!"
