Tenby Ladies travelled to play Derllys Court in the second round of The Mail on Sunday competition.

Both teams had been lucky enough to have a bye in the first round, and met on a fresh, sunny February afternoon at Derllys Court Golf Club. Tenby players had to adjust their game from links to parkland. The going was heavy with little run on the ball and the greens so much slower than Tenby.

First out was Tenby's captain, Vicky Burks, against Laura Richards. Laura took the front nine to quell her nerves, but credit to her, at four down she fought back to lose on the last putt on the 18th. Good start captain!

Second out, Heather K. Morgan came up against Rhian Walters, whose family own the course. She started with a birdie to Heather's par and her superior knowledge of the course and how to play it helped her to an easy win.

Third out for Tenby was Toni Lucas against Jane Griffiths. This was a close fought match that went to the 18th with a win for Tenby.

Anita Davies took on Ann Thomas and had a good win on the 15th, with some excellent golf played.

By this time the match was over, but the final pairing of young Bethan Morris for Tenby, and Judith Williams for Derllys, was such a cracking battle that we let it play on and went to watch. Bethan had been four down, but was fighting back. Having got the measure of the greens, she was putting well and teed-off on the 18th all-square. Her second shot took her on to the green, but Judith landed in the greenside bunker. She played out to just off the green. The tension was rising; she putted and sank the putt. Bethan now had two putts to halve the game, one to win. She putted and just missed the hole; Judith gave her the next putt, so game halved.

The final score was Tenby 3.5 Derllys Court 1.5.

The amazing spirit of the game continued inside the clubhouse as we all sat down to a sumptuous feast of homemade chicken soup with bread and cheese, followed by homemade pancakes and iced cake. Wonderful hospitality and a thoroughly enjoyable day had been enjoyed by all.
