Although heavy overnight rain had left water in several bunkers, the Teifi-side course was generally in a wonderful overall condition despite the greens being a little slower than the visitors are used to at Tenby. The setting of Cardigan Golf Club is fantastic and the views are spectacular from almost every hole - coast and sea of Cardigan Bay, the Teifi estuary and Poppit Sands, plus the Preseli Hills in the distance. A lovely walk sometimes spoilt by golf! Tenby's top pair of Ben Childs and Darren Thomas again found it tough giving shots away from home and they went down by three and two, although the game was closer than the score suggests. Uncle and nephew, Andrew and Dan Cope, were disappointed with their half as it was a game they felt they should have won. Paul Jenkins and Gary McNeilly, a steady pairing, were two down early on, but rallied well and claimed victory on the last hole, one up. Jon Bolter and Ian Thomas, who was not at his best off the tee, were always up against it, but fought hard before eventually succumbing two and one. Fifth pair, Steve Sutcliffe and Loz Phillips, suffered a similar fate as they found a big hitting youngster too much to handle. The match score now stood at three-and-a-half to Cardigan and one-and-a-half to Tenby. Hence, the visitors needed to win the last two games to tie the aggregate. Neil Thomas and Lewis Hurlow duly obliged. They dovetailed well and won two and one. Tenby's tenacious last pair of Viv John and John Stenson, heroes at Priskilly the previous week, were two down with four to play. They halved the 15th and 16th, but won the 17th and 18th, although self pride aside, their efforts were in vain as Tenby GC suffered its second Dyfed League defeat of the season. Next Saturday, the Tenby side is home to Haverfordwest. The visitors are likely to field a strong team so it is essential that Tenby reciprocate as the fixture is extremely important.
