Tenby were led by captain Iori Hart, who made sure his team were pumped up for the game. As soon as the referee blew the whistle, it was end to end rugby, with initially both teams unable to break the other’s defence.
However, it wasn’t long before some silly errors gave Tenby the edge and Madoc Evans went over for the first try.
The home team struck back almost right away with a well-worked try to even it up.
Ollie Tucker then picked up the pass 10 metres out and the home defence were left in his wake as he went over for the second try.
Again Laugharne equalised just before half-time, making the score 2-2.
In the second half, the Swifts kicked up a gear with tries from Ollie Tucker (his second,) Evan Christen, Ethan Wright and Will Hilling.
The home team managed to bring the score up to 6-5 with a few minutes left on the clock; however, Tyler James bundled over the line to make the score 7-5.
Laugharne piled on the pressure for the final minute, but Tenby held their line until the ball was turned over and ended the match as deserved winners 7-5.
Man-of-the-match went to Ollie Tucker, who made some hard yards and was dominant in defence. Also special mention goes to Tyler James, Jake Henson, Thomas Prince, Rhys Barnes, Iestyn Barrellie and Ethan Wright, who all played 15 minutes each for Laugharne, who were short of a couple of players.
UNDER 10s
Last Sunday, Tenby Under 10s (seen above right) were at home to play a round-robin against Pembroke and Neyland. After heavy rain, conditions made for a muddy pitch.
Tenby were to start the morning with a game against Pembroke. The Seasiders came out strong, with the forwards having to fight from the first whistle for possession. When Owen reclaimed the ball back from a ruck, the perfect platform was provided for Rowan to open the try count when he found a gap in the Pembroke line. A beautiful side-step put him through to run from the halfway line to score.
Both teams battled for the ball, but some fantastic work at the breakdown from the Tenby forwards kept possession with the Seasiders, and after a number of phases, it was Harry who eventually took advantage of some space down the wing to run in for try number two.
A penalty awarded to Tenby provided the Seasiders with opportunities to let their backs have a run with the ball, but Pembroke’s defence was holding strong and was stopping Tenby’s attacking line from moving forward.
Both teams were working hard and trying to gain vital territory. But it would be a well-timed pass by Rhys that would see Alfie cross in the corner for the Seasiders’ third try just before the half-time whistle.
With the pitch now very heavy on the foot, fast ball was going to be hard, but both teams still came out looking to attack at every opportunity and some big tackles were having to be made by both sides.
The Seasiders’ fourth try would open the try count of the second half. After a determined charge and great show of strength by Lewis, good territory was gained and the Pembroke defence was drawn in. Once the ball landed in the hands of Louie, he took advantage of the space created and sliced his way through the defensive line to score a well-deserved try.
Pembroke were to follow this up with some attacking phases of their own, but Tenby’s defence stood strong and it would be the Seasiders who had the final say when just before the final whistle, Alfie, with some strong running, found the angle to cut through the Pembroke line and cross for the fifth and final try of the game.
Final score was 25-0 to Tenby.
The next game of the morning would see Pembroke take on Neyland, with the final score being 35-5 to Neyland. Unfortunately, due to the pitch being cut up in the first two games, the last match between Tenby and Neyland had to be reluctantly postponed.
