The Brooks Cup is the oldest silverware played for in the mixed at Tenby Golf Club, and is traditionally played for on Easter Saturday. It was presented to the club by Major A. J. Brooks and his wife on his retirement from Manorbier Camp in 1949. It has been played for in all weathers, but this year was truly wonderful. We had blue skies and sunshine making the views of the town and coastline look beautiful from the course.
The wind made it a little tricky at times, but was nowhere as strong as it has been this week. As we waited for the last cards in having wined and dined well with Lyn, Lee and Emma, we were entertained by the fabulous music of Damion from London. We were glad to hear that this is to be a regular feature of Saturday nights.
Thanks for Rhys for doing the cards and the bag draw. Winning back their entry money were Irene Gilman and Idwal David, Paul and Ros Jenkins, Gareth and Angela Davies and Pam and Steve Cole.
Thanks also to Irene for helping with the scoring and presenting. Only two twos were recorded, one after the other on the 12th. Mervyn Tucker's drive hit the pin and rolled on about six foot, to be putted in by Heather; then Chris Beecher followed the line and put his just four foot from the pin, to be holed by wife Carole.
Finally, the scores were all in with Roger Schooling and Maura Gunning just missing out on the prizes with 35 points. The top three scores were all on 37 points. Beaten on the back six into third place were Ben Price and Gill John; beaten into second place on the back nine were Ros and Paul Jenkins; but the winners of the Brooks Cup for 2015 were Mervyn Tucker and Heather K. Morgan. That is the second time they have won it, and Mervyn was also delighted to tell everyone he also won it with Heather's daughter Katie when she was a junior.
There is Friendly Foursomes over 14 holes, draw for partners, on Friday, April 17. This is a social event as we have supper after playing. If you have never played mixed foursomes before why not give it a go? If you have a non-golfing partner they are welcome to join us for supper. Booking is available on the computer. The tee-off starts at 4 pm, but you can make up your own fours once the partners are drawn.
Also on the noticeboard you will see two notices for inter-club mixed matches. There is a home match planned against Ashburnham on Sunday, May 10, and an away match against St. Pierre on Sunday, June 14. Please read the notices.
Finally, we have drawn Derllys Court at Haverfordwest in the Ping Challenge and the chosen team will go up once we have finalised dates.
H.K.M.
Rabbits round-up
WINTER LEAGUE
Sunday, March 22, saw the final round of this year's Winter League taking place and, with 12 Rabbits taking part, the three leading contenders were each kept in a separate group to maintain the suspense.
Going into the last round only five points separated the top three of Steve Cole, Robin Bradbury and Paul Davies, based on their best eight scores. A dry, but breezy day gave everyone an opportunity to improve their league position.
The final round did see a number of improved scores across the board, but the top three positions did not change. In third place was Paul Davies (301 points), with Robin Bradbury (307 pts) being runner-up for the second consecutive season. Our winner was the ever-consistent Steve Cole with a total of 309 points. The wooden spoon was 'won' by Adrian Palmer.
DUFFY CUP and JOE S. WILLIAMS SHIELD
Extremely windy conditions greeted 11 Rabbits and one guest on Sunday, March 29, although the rain stopped falling shortly before tee-off, for our only stroke play competition.
Unsurprisingly, there were to be no handicap changes after this event, but amazingly, there were no NR's recorded which is a tribute to the battling dozen. No twos were recorded either as putting in the gusty conditions proved extremely difficult.
The results of the Duffy Cup (best net score) were as follows: winner - Adrian Palmer, 76; runner-up - Phil Carpenter, 79; 3. John Ball, 82.
The results of the Joe S. Williams Shield (best gross score) were as follows: winner - Phil Carpenter, 99; runner-up - John Ball, 100; 3. Adrian Palmer, 100.
'New2Golf' campaign
A new campaign for Tenby Golf Club called 'New2Golf' starts next week with a ladies funded programme starting at 6 pm, on Tuesday, April 13, which will run for six weeks.
Anyone interested in taking up golf should contact Rhys Harry on (01834) 844447 or [email protected]">[email protected].
In National Golf Awareness Month in May, the club will be starting the Golf Union of Wales Coaching Centres Programme.
This was launched nationally on Wednesday where the club's professional Rhys Harry was at Celtic Manor for the media launch day.
With only 11 centers opening across Wales, this is a truly special programme delivered by GUW accredited golf professionals at accredited facilities.
Classes will be limited to eight players per class aimed at ages eight years and above, charged at £5 per session. This will be a limited programme for dedicated Juniors who see golf as their main sport.
Finally, the club will be continuing its junior coaching both internally for members, with additional classes starting in May and via the ongoing schools programme.
