Tenby Golf Club's 36th consecutive Open Week got underway last Saturday when visitors from all over the UK were welcomed at the Annual Captains Reception. The club was full, with many visitors and members enjoying the relaxed atmosphere, catching up with old freinds, and making new ones. Following introductions from club secretary David Hancock, the Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane and club captain Tony Key OBE welcomed everyone, and 'whetted their appetite' for what promised to be another fantastic week of golf, camaraderie and entertainment. The captain went on to say that the club had been very busy over the winter developing the new projects, which are now complete and ready for use by all visitors and members alike. It was certainly evident from the packed and convivial atmosphere in the clubhouse, and the assembled throng enjoying a drink on the sun-drenched, brand new terrace, that the various additions had all been very well received. With the course now recovering quickly from the ravages of the winter, the greens rolling fast and true once more, and the covered driving range providing an ideal warm-up area, all looks set for another successful and popular week Results up until Tuesday were:

County Seniors Open Day: On May 27, the Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire Ladies' County Golf Association held a Seniors Open Day at Cardigan. Senior events are always popular, but the number of entrants this year - 92 - surprised everyone. On the other hand, Cardigan is one of the area's favourite courses, so perhaps so many entrants was not unusual. The over 50s are eligible to play and there are five groups in ascending ages. The largest group was for the over 70s, which shows there is life in the old girls yet and also there is much to be said for leading an active life as one gets older. Idle youngsters take note! The winners of the five age groups were excluded from their groups and received separate prizes which meant each group had an extra prize. The overall winner was Rosie Moore, Trefloyne, 42 points, Anna Hubbard, Tenby, was second with 41 points, Anita Thomas, Haverfordwest, on 40 points, was third, from Anne Wilks, Tenby, and the final winner was Janet Jones, of Cardigan, also on 40 points, so Tenby was well-represented in the main category and Bev Owen won group A and Maura Rimell scored well in her group. We congratulate our four outstanding players. Well done. Weekly competitions: Inevitably the mixed weather we had in May affected the competitions played. The second Hill-Lowe Bogey found Sophie Lovatt in exceptional form when she scored +8 and reduced her handicap considerably. Georgina Ormond was second on +3 and Anne Wilks third on +1. The Saturday GUW May Medal was won by Sarah Waring, with Trevayne Keohane second in very poor weather. This was followed by the cancellation of the Jubilee Foursomes on May 8. The GUW Medal and Rhian Pearn qualifiers were played on May 15 and Denise Edwards won both with nett 74 and Anne Wilks was second on nett 75. We wish Denise success when she represents Tenby in Neath later in the year. The nine-hole Stableford was won by Jo Walsh Morgan with 18 points, from Linda Thomas on the second nine The 3rd Hill Lowe-Bogey was won by Bev Owen on +3 from Penny Cope on –2. The last competition in May was the Coronation Foursomes Stableford qualifier and this was won by Vicky Burks and Heather Morgan on 36 points, from Pam Cole and Pat Fox on 35. We wish Vicky and Heather a good round at the Monmouthshire on July 31. Junior success: I mentioned youngsters earlier, but that does not apply to any of our Junior girls and those now leaving their teens. They all work very hard at their golf, none more so than Bethan Morris who has recently been selected in the team of six to represent Wales in the Under 18 European Girls' Championship in Slovakia in early July. We congratulate Bethan on her selection and wish her and the team every success in July.
