The club's first Ladies and Girls Open Evening of 2014, held last Thursday, was well attended.

Those present were treated to a short demonstration by Tenby club professional, Rhys Harry, and his assistant, Tom Hilling, followed by some 'hands on' chipping and putting.

This was the first in a long line of community awareness days planned at the club.

All who came along said that they had enjoyed the late afternoon session, which was followed by an informal welcome from the Ladies' Section, over tea and cakes in the clubhouse.

If the success of the previous few years is anything to go by, the largest ladies/girls section in the whole of Pembrokeshire should continue to grow. In fact, 2013 saw girls outnumber boys in all coaching sessions!

Seniors lost in the mist

First of all, abject apologies to Mel Hicks for declaring that his was the lowest overall score on the seniors tour to North Wales. The honour should have been attributed to Maurice Lewis (with Mel close on his heels).

This week's match was against Neath and they arrived in good spirits to a degree of warm sunshine. They left in even better spirits, having enjoyed a delightful afternoon in a mixture of warm sunshine interspersed with rolling mist that drifted in from the Bristol Channel.

Neath captain, Keith Thomas, started the match by birdying the first hole and Tenby captain, Allen Watts, replied by birdying the second. This was the start of a close match in which the Neath pair always kept their noses in front, leading by one after nine. They won the 10th and halved the next four holes before picking another up on the 15th when 12-handicapper Dave Matthews, capitalised on his last shot against Allen. Even though Des Stone won the 16th, the pair conceded on the 17th.

Dudley Williams and Alan Yates were close behind and had a similar struggle, with this match being played out to the last. The shortened 18th hole was playing as a par three and Paul Hopkins and Bob Voss thought that they only had to halve it to add a point for the team. Alan Yates had other ideas and effectively used his last shot to score a three, net two, to win the hole and halve the match.

Even the 'wonderful' Martin Neilan, aided and abetted by Tony Morgan, could only salvage a half in another close run match.

Jeff Hopkins and Chris Bailey were well and truly 'Jim Martined', even referring to him as a bandit - tut, tut! It appears that, despite drifting a few drives wide, he could do no wrong when it came to putting. His ball was flying into the hole from all angles and all directions, much to the delight of his partner, John Hayhoe. He putted in from off the green on the sixth and again birdied one of the par fours to demoralise the opposition who begged for mercy on the 12th. Oh yes, John Hayhoe did play his part by winning a hole.

Derek Bath may have thought he was in for an easy ride as he set off in the company of Jim Moffatt. However, they stumbled over parts of the course as Hywel Thomas and Brian Warlow eased in front over the latter stages.

Paul Bradley was given a rude awakening as he lifted his head above the parapet on the second green. Allen Watts and Des Stone both sent their drives from the fifth tee to land just beyond him on the apron. This spurred him and Ken Gouldsbrough into action as they became the other Tenby pair to close out their match after 16 holes.

At this stage it was a stalemate, with both clubs on three points. No need to panic, Peter Williams and Brian Waters were the last pair in. All hopes rested on their performance. Alas it was not to be. They, too, had succumbed, this time to the wiles and golfing expertise of Paul Clarke and Byron Whitney.

A disappointing day for the Tenby team, but a great day for the camaraderie and spirit enjoyed by all who were able to play. Unfortunately, four of the Neath team had to withdraw at the last minute and Allen can only dream of what might have happened had there been nine or 10 matches.

Footnote: John Hayhoe won a golf ball in the raffle and declared to all, 'Lovely, another year's supply of balls.' Keep 'em coming John.

Results: A. Watts and D. Stone lost to K. Thomas and D. Matthews 3 and 1; D. Williams and A. Yates halved with P. Hopkins and B. Voss; M. Neilan and T. Morgan halved with S. Penny and M. Mogford; J. Moffatt and D. Bath lost to H. Thomas and B. Warlow 3 and 2; P. Bradley and K. Gouldsbrough beat G. Ball and B. Henderson 3 and 2; J. Martin and J. Hayhoe beat J. Hopkins and C. Bailey 7 and 6; P. Williams and B. Waters lost to P. Clarke and B. Whitnay 4 and 3.
