What a pleasure it is to play golf when the sun shines, the breeze is light and the home team all have familiar faces. So it was on Thursday, May 2, when 18 of Tenby's vintage golfers journeyed to the north coast and squared up to the Cardigan seniors.

Because of the one hour driving time, the first match drove off at 12 o'clock, and as is often the case at Cardigan, we had a time-saving two-tee start. The course, which was in fine condition, was soon full of grey-haired, experienced players who consistently hit the greens in regulation, never made three putts and frequently holed from bunkers.

Sorry... that's a typo! It should read: 'Consistently hit the bunkers, frequently made three putts and never hit the greens in regulation'. What was I thinking!

Whatever the performance statistics, the golf was enjoyable, the company convivial and the conditions delightful.

After the 18 matches had run their course, the players congregated in the clubhouse for an excellent match meal and a wee tipple for those who were not driving, followed by a word from both captains - and the result!

The photographer caught Cardigan captain Barrie Davies and his partner Malcolm Obee, along with Tenby captain Tony Morgan and his partner Des Stone, replacing lost energy with tasty calories - before announcing that the result was a win for Tenby by 5.5 to 3.5 - Huzzah!

The next match on the seniors calendar will be a home fixture versus Milford Haven on Tuesday, May 7 - this is a totally irrelevant piece of information since the match will have been played and the report written by the time this Observer goes to press. However, the Editor demands more than 300 words per article, and mere hacks like me dare not argue!

Rabbits revel in the sunshine

Blue skies and sunshine greeted the Rabbits on Sunday morning as they played for the Gwyn Tibbs Trophy.

Fourteen eager competitors set off in this Stableford qualifying competition and the wonderful weather conditions were matched by some wonderful scores out on the course.

Four twos were recorded by Paul Davies (2), Chris Smith and Richard Prout, each one earning the princely sum of £4.

On to the main event and third place went to Bill Davies with 39 points, beating Mark Edwards on countback. Second place went to the 'oldest swinger in town', Meurig Jones, with 41 points.

The winner, on countback, with 41 points was Chris Smith (seen above right receiving the trophy from captain Phil Carpenter)

Both Chris and Meurig were rewarded for their efforts with a one shot cut in their handicaps.

SUMMER LEAGUE

The Rabbits' campaign got underway with a 6-1 home win over the reigning champions, Penrhos, which was followed up by a defeat away to Glyn Abbey by 5.5-1.5.

However, under the new scoring system, we picked up 1.5 points in the defeat.

Next fixtures are a home tie with Haverfordwest on May 12 and an away game at Penrhos on Saturday, June 8.

On Sunday, June 9, the section will be competing for the John Cook Classic Trophy, which is open to all paid up members of the Rabbits.

This will be a 9 am start and entry is via the computer system in the clubhouse.
