We're still waiting for the warmer weather to arrive, the same as the rest of the population of the UK. There is some evidence of better fishing on the horizon, though, with Bull Huss showing again from local marks and member Matt Rees landing a near 10lb fish from Saundersfoot Harbour Wall (see right).
The flounder fishing has also improved, with members enjoying a very successful visit to Pendine last Sunday. Bass remain few and far between. Anyway, a round-up of club activities is as follows.
April 14, Beach Match, Pendine: A good solid turnout of 17 anglers entered the latest Pendine match with yet again high hopes for good returns with good beach conditions promised. Eleven of those competing eventually weighed in and all were flounders with no bass on this occasion.
Results were - 1. Julian (who else?) Davies, Flounder 0.600kg; 2. John Nic, bag, 2.466kg; 3. Steve Cook, Flounder 0.564kg.
April 17, Mid Week Match: Ten anglers tried their hand at the midweek match which commenced from Penally Station for a change. Saundersfoot Harbour, Milford Haven, Freshwater East were some of the venues visited on a blustery night with a stiff and cold westerly. Most struggled, but it was great to see Garf return to the fray with a vengeance with three fish (Dogs and Pout) and first place. Stuart was his usual consistent self too! Well done!
Results - 1. Garf Thomas, LSD 0.737kg; 2. Stuart Allen, bag, 1.371kg; 3. Totter Taylor, LSD 0.640kg.
April 20, South Beach Night Owl: It was great to see a good turnout for the first of the Spring/Summer night action, with 14 anglers booking in on what sometimes isn't the most prolific of venues. Shame it rather lived up to its recent reputation with just a few dogs and, surprisingly, dabs to the scales. The club welcomed two new members to its ranks, Mark Bennett and Henry Probert, and Henry duly weighed in first time out. Totter left it late with his double sand eel bait (quite an expert these days!), but winkled out one fish to stop 'Old Gits Utd' from having it all their own way. Well done. Some sort of normal service was resumed in some ways though.
Results - 1. Nev Andrews, LSD 0.924kg; 2nd Barry Taylor, bag, 1.425kg; 3. Totter (Last Minute Larry) Taylor, LSD 0.644kg.
May 2, Pendine Mid Week Match: With beach access at Pendine slowly returning to some sort of routine after recent public works, 16 anglers gathered for the first of the Pendine Mid Weeks to take advantage of the day/night option.
After the recent rough weather, which saw other local clubs having excellent bags of fish in recent matches, it was typical for Tenby that the wind vanished and we were left with a rather difficult, flat sea. Overall the fishing was very slow and some local worthies even blanked! But Adam Roberts and new member Dan Thomas returned with excellent bags of flats given the conditions and Gareth 'Pugso' Pro returned to winning ways with a nice flat too.
Results were - 1. Gareth Protheroe, Flounder 0.680kg; 2. Dan Thomas, bag, 2.553kg; 3. Steve Cook, Flounder 0.667kg.
Adam's bag was 2.442kg which was excellent given the conditions and the club welcomed another two new members in addition to Dan with Mark from West Wales Angling joining together with his buddy Mark Turner, welcome guys!
May 12, Denning Shield, Pendine: A real grotty day weatherwise for the Denning Shield, but surf wise, things couldn't have been better as 14 anglers booked in for an afternoon's flattie bashing and bassing(!). Recent reports suggested we would have a busy time and for once, we were rewarded with a great day fishing wise. Every angler weighed in between three and 15 flats. No bass were seen (which was a huge surprise really), but with a total weight exceeding 45kg, we are not complaining! The smiles at the weigh-in said it all and thanks for making it a super afternoon gentlemen.
Three anglers managed bags in excess of 5kg, Nev, Stuart and Steve Cook. Joe Pro and Adam also had notable bags. John Nic and Julian claimed to be targeting better fish, which comes out in the results, but the rest of us mere mortals were just happy to catch what was there!
Results - 1. Julian Davies, Flounder 0.897kg and Denning Shield winner; 2. Nev (Mr. Tantrum) Andrews, bag 5.354kg; 3. John Nic, Flounder 0.793kg; 4. Joe (Specimen) Pro, Flounder 0.710kg
Shore Fish of the Month for April went to Julian Davies for a Flounder of 0.600 kg.
