The matches are slowing up in frequency now and it seems as if the fish are following suit. We are definitely entering the 'doldrums' period for sea angling and it will take a bit of effort for about six weeks to keep the interest going. Results of recent matches are as follows:

January 29, Beach Rover: The weather turned nasty with a vengeance for this match. During the week previous it looked as if access at Pendine was not possible, but then late in the day, firing was cancelled. A quick straw poll secured a consensus and Pendine it was. Thanks go to Tony, the beach warden, for keeping us posted with developments and manning the gate as usual.

Fishing was very, very difficult, with a persistent south-easterly wind and freezing cold, lumpy sleet all match and all anglers sought the comfort of their cars before the official end of the match.

At the weigh-in, only a few flounders were presented to the scales, but all were in supreme condition yet again.

Results were - 1. Nev Andrews, flounder 0.793kg; 2. Barry Taylor, bag 1.176kg; 3. John Nicholas, flounder 0.522kg.

February 1, Mid Week Match: The weather threatened sub zero temps and an awkward easterly wind for this match and this resulted in just four competitors suiting and booting up for the fray.

The fishing seems to have slowed up since late January and yet again proved to be the case. Plenty of small fish were found, particularly in the Haven, but in the end, just Nev managed to trouble the scorer with an LSD and one Dab.

The result therefore was - 1. Nev Andrews, LSD 0.606kg.

February 5, Rover: The first of the Roving series took place last Sunday and seven competitors booked in. Pendine, Lydstep and the Haven were the venues selected to try and at least weigh in at this difficult time of the year.

Despite some very reasonable results from the Haven recently, this failed to produce. Roy found a small flounder from Lydstep, but Julian banished the memory of his recent 'blank' from his previous visit to Pendine with five flats.

Results in this 'pairs' event were - 1. Julian Davies and John Nicholas, 13 pts; 2. Roy Edge and Mickey Bowles, 8 pts.

Fish of the month for January was Nev Andrews's flounder of 0.793 kg.

Could members please note that the annual supper will be held at the Ex-Servicemen's Club on February 18. £9 for adults and £4.50 for juniors gets you a three-course meal with choice of beef or chicken. Let Totter know if you're coming on 07855710850.

The next match is on the following day, February 19, between 11.30 am and 3.30 pm. We have asked for Pendine access again and if there's no firing, we should be able to go up the beach. This is a good time for prime flounder and early bass, so let's get after them!

Finally, we are over the border in Lloegr fishing against Clevedon Pier SAC on March 4. We need as many members as possible to make the journey to overturn a small deficit from the first leg of this challenge match. It's always good fun anyway. Please let Nev know if you can attend, for catering purposes.
