Four young Pembrokeshire swimmers will be competing in a major swimming championships this week.

Hannah Saunders, Carys Thomas, Kelsey Williams and Jordan Harding have all qualified for the ASA National Age Group Championships, which kicks-off in Sheffield at the weekend.

All four girls are coached by Pembrokeshire County Council's swimming development coach Paul Dowey and train at the Haverfordwest Leisure Centre with the Pembrokeshire Performance Squad.

The teenagers will each be swimming individual events, but have also qualified to swim in the team events of 4x100 freestyle and 4x100 medley relays.

It's only the second time in Pembrokeshire county swimming's history that a girls' relay time has qualified to swim at the championships.

"This event showcases the country's best young swimming talent and those taking part are the key for the future success of British swimming," said Paul Dowey. "We're all very proud of all of them."

It will be the third time that Carys Thomas, 14, and Kelsey Williams, 13, have competed at the national event and both made it through to the finals last year.

Hannah and Jordan, both 14, will be competing for a second time, with Jordan competing for the first time in an individual event.

Kelsey and Jordan originally swam for Haverfordwest Seals swimming club, Hannah swam for the Tenby Dolphins, while Carys started off with the Pembroke and District Club.

The British Gas ASA National Age Group Championships will be held at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield over five days from Sunday, July 22.

Paul Dowey added that the team was grateful to the Milford Haven Port Authority for its financial assistance of the swimmers to send them and their coach to Sheffield.

Anyone interested in joining a competitive swimming club should contact one of Pembrokeshire's Leisure Centres at Fishguard, Milford Haven, Pembroke, Haverfordwest or Tenby.
