The Brooks Cup is the oldest Mixed Trophy at Tenby Golf Club and is always played on Easter Saturday. It was presented to the club by Major Brooks and his wife on his retirement from Manorbier Camp in 1949.
Having been keen members of Tenby Golf Club, they then retired back to England and were never heard of again; but their trophy marks the beginning of the proper Mixed Golfing year and is always keenly fought over.
Despite the Arctic conditions, the sun brought 23 couples out to fight the good fight, or in my case, just to have a super game of golf, in delightful company, on a beautiful golf course.
Two of those couples even managed a two on the sixth hole. Maybe it was in the name, as Tony Key and Tony Morris, helped by their respective partners Marion Clarke and Barbara Morris, were the successful ones.
Four couples came in with 35 points, but Barbara and Tony Morris, and Anna and Keith Hubbard just missed out on the prizes on the back nine. Steve and Pam Cole's 35 points put them in fourth place, and Andy and Di Williams' 35 points got them third place. Lewis Hurlow found himself another good partner in Maura Rimell to get second place with 36 points. However, clear winners with 40 points were Tony Key and Marion Clarke.Outstanding golf in difficult conditions, so well done to you all.
The bag draws were won by Trevayne Keohane and Barrie Frayne, David Blackmore and Sue Shooter, Lewis Hurlow and Maura Rimell, and Bev Owen and Andrew Morton.
The captain presented the top three pairs with an Easter egg and thanked everyone for playing, before wishing all members of the club a very happy Easter. He also made no apology for the fact that the greens had been hollow-tined, as given the situation due to the weather so far this year, the greens staff had been in an impossible position to try and keep our beautiful course in a condition that we are all guilty of taking for granted.
Thanks to club captain, Chris Beecher, and his vice-vaptain, Tony Key, and the Ladies' captain, Liz Storey, and her vice-captain, Marion Clarke, for showing their support for the Mixed by playing in the competition.
The Friendly Foursomes are due to start again on Friday, April 19. The sign-up sheet is on the noticeboard by the back door. This is social golf played over 14 holes at 4 pm. Partners are drawn, so you don't have to come as a pair. A meal afterwards...what could be better?
Also the first round of the Llewellyn Thomas has to be played by May 5, so please try and get that played as soon as you can.
Looking ahead, the house committee is running a Mixed Open on Monday, August 26. It is hoped that this will become an annual event, so please support it and get your money in to guarantee your time (tel. 01834 842987).
Also, the first round of the Ping Challenge has been announced and we have drawn Derllys Court at Haverfordwest. Keep watching that noticeboard for a list of team members.
Finally, a big thank you to Gareth, Julie and team, for their brilliant hospitality in the clubhouse on Saturday afternoon. It augurs well for a brilliant Mixed Golfing year in 2013. Come and be part of it!
H.K.M.
