LAUGHARNE 41 pts PEMBROKE DOCK QUINS 12 The Quins put in a spirited performance against a side that were playing in Division our last season. On a blustery afternoon and a rock hard pitch, the Quins got off to a reasonable start, forcing a scrum penalty in the first few minutes from which outside-half Andrew Price sent a towering kick down the touchline to gain the Quins an early foothold in the hosts' territory. On 10 minutes, Laugharne had their first chance to attack when a fine grubber kick from outside-half Owen Thomas had the Quins back-pedalling, but number eight Alex Pierce covered well to prevent the danger. It was not long, however, before the Quins' defence cracked when, after sustained pressure, Owen Thomas finished off a fine move to cross wide out. Centre Tony Jameson missed the conversion. The Quins were soon back on the attack and were desperately unlucky not to score when flanker Dean Wilcocks charged down an attempted clearance, but the ball did not bounce favourably for the visitors and the chance went begging. The home side stretched their lead further when left wing Carwyn Evans rounded off some fine support play to score under the posts for an easy conversion by Jameson. The Laugharne backs at this time were becoming more and more dangerous as they ran the ball at every opportunity, and it was not surprising when centre Luke Starkey crossed for an unconverted try to push his side's lead out to 17-0, which ended the scoring for the first half. The Quins started the second half on the front foot and began to exert some pressure of their own and when full-back Chris Harris scored wide after a determined 15-yard run, it was no more than they deserved. Price was just wide with the conversion from the touchline. On the hour, the Quins scored again when Alex Pierce sped away from halfway to give a perfectly timed pass to supporting scrum-half Nathan George, who raced the remaining 25 yards to score halfway out. Price slotted the difficult conversion to bring the Quins to within a score at 17-12. The hosts brought on a number of subs which seemed to shift the game back in their favour, and they ran in four more tries, by right wing Grant Waters, Jameson, a second for Owen Thomas and by substitute Thomas Thomas with the last move of the match, two of which were converted by Jameson.
