Tigers tame Garnant
Garnant Park Golf Club arrived at South Pembs last weekend, a team with all matching shirts who looked sharp and were keen to get a result as they enjoyed a pre-match squash on the patio overlooking the Milford Haven waterway. First match out and Alan, -1, and Luke, 4, found themselves up against a seven and an 11-handicap pairing. If this was the best that Garnant had, captain Evs was keen to get a big result. Alan and Luke duly delivered with a 4 and 3 win (giving six shots away first out is the norm for Alan this year). Match two and Evs kept his partnership with Percy, and quickly got some holes in front and helped by an outrageous chip-in on the 10th by Mark (which one though) strolled through 7 and 6 winners. Off third, Mike Shaw left his cricket shoes at home and put on some golf spikes and together with Spencer won 6 and 5 - Mike's best game for the club so far. Danny O and an unusually quiet Micky B were out fourth. Micky was still getting over his replacement putter grip costing him £20, but despite his financial woes, the pair still had enough in hand and banked a 4 and 3 win. As Evs had finished early, he had the good fortune to watch the remaining matches make their way off the course. Fifth game out and Bob V and Peter B trudged in off the 17th grumbling about a 13-handicapper having the game of his life, subjecting them to a 2 and 1 loss. Late arrivals, but early starters, Billy H and Robbie (chicken legs) were next to strut onto the terrace having decided to take the short cut in, running out 4 and 3 winners. Evs had a long wait for the next pair as Chris V and Slicey Ricey let the Garnant boys have the full use of their shots (they really are a generous pair), before beating them on the 17th 2 and 1. Simon and Paul G were staring at a defeat walking onto the 18th green one down, but a poor chip and two putt by the opposition gave Simon a sniff of victory and he squirted his putt into the cup for an unlikely win, having been three down with five to play. Last in the batting order, surely for the first time in his career, was P. J. and his partner Bob G, proving that you can mix cricket and hockey together and end up with something that resembles a golf swing. Another win for the home pair of 4 and 2 meant a team score of 8-1 and a nice 11 points collected, going some way towards our target for this year - stay in Division One and possibly get some matching shirts so that team members don't resemble a break-off from a pool rack when gathered round the bar.
