The first league matches of 2014 were decimated by the weather, with a host of games called off due to waterlogged pitches after the New Year storms.
Being the match of the day, there was a sizeable crowd at Phoenix Park, with both Hakin United and Merlins Bridge players in attendance as the game between those teams was also abandoned.
Narberth were able to travel with a strong squad and didn't disappoint as Matthew Price had two gilt-edged chances to put the Bluebirds ahead, but was unable to do so. The visitors were the stronger side in the opening exchanges, although the threat of Rhys Dalling was always evident and it was no surprise to see him open the scoring to give the home side the lead.
Further chances followed for both sides, with many people calling it a 'blood and thunder' encounter and Narberth were rewarded for their endeavours when Adi Jones dazzled when dribbling his way through for the equaliser just before the break.
In the second half, Narberth were the dominant side as Morgan Preece hit the bar, as did Jones from a free-kick, while Justin Blewitt's header also hit the uprights.
If this proved that January 4 was not going to be Narberth's day, it was ascertained when the home side scored with just minutes to go to steal a 2-1 win that Steve Jones described as 'sickening.'
"We were definitely good for a point," said Jones. "The Hakin boys in the crowd were delighted with the result, of course, as they now have two games on us and are just a point behind, but we should have got a draw at least.
"It's the not the best start to the year, but it was a terrific game of football and we'll bounce back from this I'm sure. We're a good side and have proved that this season."
Jones didn't envisage leading the table at the start of the season, adding that a top four spot was their aim. However, being in the position, even with Hakin and Goodwick breathing down their necks, is not a total surprise.
"We've got a good squad now, a big powerful squad, and whereas in the past the heavy pitches may not have suited our style of play, we can at least compete with teams when the weather turns.
"It's a very open league this year, with many teams capable of beating each other. We'll bounce back from this defeat. People may think we're out of the running now, but I'm still positive, it's going to be tough, but we're a tough side now."

The current West Wales Cup holders had a point to prove after being expelled from this season's competition for fielding an ineligible player and vented their frustrations for this administrative lapse by thrashing the Sports 9-0.
In a match that was played on a different pitch due to the conditions of their regular Glebelands field, the Tigers were too tough to tame and let rip with a flurry of goals which the visitors had no response to.
Elsewhere, Pennar Robins' seconds drew 3-3 with Fishguard Sports in a thrilling game at Bush Camp.
Steve James scored twice for the home side, while Gareth Scarfe added another to ensure a share of the points.
Manorbier United found the going tough at Cosheston Cougars as they were beaten 6-1 by the home side. Andrew Joseph scored for the away side, but four goals from Wayne Boswell and one apiece by Danny Randell and Luke Hendrie were enough to send them home with nothing.
Lamphey beat Lawrenny 4-2 as Dean Scourfield scored a hat-trick and Dan Kitts the once to secure their ninth win of the season, thus keeping them in the promotion hunt, while in the Division Five Cup, Angle seconds beat Camrose 3-0 after Jason Davies, Nathan Ferrier, Lee Duigan and Gareth Fisher all scored.
