An unusual lack of rain on Tuesday tempted 33 seniors out onto the somewhat sodden links to try their hand in the 11th eclectic competition of the winter season.

In very windy conditions, these game lads dodged the standing water, avoided the muddy bits and navigated between the tine holes on the greens to return some respectable scores, as can be seen from these results:

In third place with 34 points, the frequently featured Stan Hudson. Claiming second place with 35 points, Bill Davies continues to claim a place in the winners' enclosure, but this week's outright winner, equalling the SSS with an enviable 36 points was the returning Brian Diment.

Speaking of returning, it was really nice to see Jeff Banfield back on the links for a game, and Mike Fox - who won the charity raffle again - opted to return the £10 prize, but only to the needy Chicken Trotters, thus doubling their cash reserves!

Now to some serious business, as you will recall next Tuesday we will be competing in a 'Waltz' Stableford competition in teams of three. There has been a generally low level of knowledge of the rules and scoring procedures for this format, so my Colonial Captain has tasked me with acquainting you with the information.

Basically, this form of modified Texas Scramble has been nicknamed the 'Waltz' because the sequence of playing and scoring follows waltz melody timing of 1,2,3 - 1,2,3. This is not to be confused with Strictly Come Dancing, and Allen Watts will not be emulating Bruce Forsyth and greeting us all with "Nice to see you - to see you nice" etc. Neither does the term 1, 2, 3 require three players to tee-off simultaneously - so the photogenic trio of Jim Moffatt, Bart Youll and Bill Davies (seen left) have wasted their time practising synchronised driving!

The teams of three, all drawn this week by Jim Martin, will all do their individual best to get the ball in the hole with the least number of shots - but the scores will only be recorded as follows:

On hole one - The gross score of the team member who has achieved the most Stableford points, taking into account his handicap.

On hole two - The combined gross scores of the two team members who have achieved the most Stableford points, taking into account their handicaps.

On hole three – The combined gross scores of all three team members.

Hence one, two, three! This sequence is repeated on holes 4, 5 and 6 - 7, 8 and 9 etc. The gross scores will be converted into the team's final Stableford score when the results are fed into the computer terminal.

Any further relevant information, including handicap allowance, minimum number of tee shots per player etc. will be available on February 11. There endeth today's lesson!
