The conditions on Thursday, June 12, were as close to perfect as one could possibly desire, and Tenby seniors were fortunate enough to be playing an away match against South Pembs seniors. A good field of 20 players from each club made a two-tee start, suitably adorned in summer clothes and sporting a dash of sun lotion. The South Pembs team were looking for revenge after suffering a defeat at Tenby in March, while the Tenby old and bold were looking for a win to boost their ratings. Vice-captain Bart Youll was standing in for Allen Watts, who was recuperating in hospital after a replacement hip operation. Allen remained in close contact by virtue of WiFi in his ward and an Ipad in his pyjamas! - isn't technology splendid? The undisputed highlight of the match was that rarest of birds - an eagle - which was scored by Tenby's John Hancock on the par three third hole - John's second hole in one in a long and successful golf career. The photograph below, skilfully taken by Tony Morgan, shows John retrieving the ball from the hole - you will note, dear reader, that he is not smiling broadly as one would expect - doubtless because he has just remembered that he will have to observe the custom of buying a bottle of Scotland's finest for the rest of the field. Congratulations John - and thank you for the Scotch! The 'lowlight' of the day was that moment when the two captains, Bart from Tenby and Keith Rees from South Pembs (ictured above), addressed the players after a truly excellent match meal (and the Scotch!). Despite John's eagle, Tenby had snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by losing 1.5 to 8.5 - just how Bart is going to explain that to Allen remains to be seen! Every single senior joins me in congratulating captain Allen on a successful 'pit stop', where his hip was skilfully and rapidly swopped, and we all wish him a rapid recovery as he recuperates at home followed by a welcome return to the links. Post-operative exercises are painful and uncomfortable, but we are confident that you will be sprinting around again very soon. And finally, a reminder that there are vacancies to be filled for the matches on July 3 and 8, get your name down - see you there! M.F.
