Tenby Golf Club claimed its second away victory in the DGU League this season with a very hard-fought win at Priskilly last Sunday. Priskilly is a picturesque nine hole course with several difficult tree-lined holes and delightful rural outlooks situated between Letterston and Mathry. Mid-way through the rounds, matters did not look promising for the visitors. They were up in just one game, level in three and down in three, but a second nine rally saw them come out on top in a very close encounter. First out again for Tenby were Ben Childs and Darren Thomas who played solidly, but struggled to give a full compliment of shots to two up-and-coming youngsters. The Priskilly pair registered a clutch of birdies and ran out three and two winners. Dan Cope and Andrew Cope enjoyed a great battle against a wily pair of experienced characters and held on to win by one up, the narrowest of margins. Matt Adams was Tenby's best performer in the Dyfed League in 2013, but he was making his first appearance this year alongside his regular partner Gary McNeilly. Unfortunately, they started poorly losing the first four holes and were eventually defeated five and four. The fourth rubber was a very tight game. Dai Cope performed well early on and Jon Bolter repaid him after the turn to secure a two and one win. The match was now level at two games each. In the last game, Tenby's Neil Thomas and Neil Webb were well ahead and eventually won four and three. Thus the remaining two ties were absolutely crucial. In the fifth game, Rob Willcox and Loz Phillips were three down with six to play. They then won three of the next four holes, but lost the short 17th and could not muster a win on the 18th. Hence, it was down to the sixth pairing, long-time friends Viv John and John Stenson. Their game see-sawed throughout with the lead changing hands on a number of occasions, but was all-square with one hole to play. The Tenby pair both played the long 18th soundly and victory was theirs, again by the narrowest of margins. As in previous matches, Priskilly's proprietors, the Evans family, and team made Tenby feel very welcome and the post-golf meal was excellent. Tenby's next two league fixtures are away to Cardigan tomorrow, Saturday, August 2, and home to Haverfordwest on Saturday, August 9. Strong sides are required for both matches in order that the current momentum is maintained.
