Tenby United 39 pts. Llandeilo 3
Andrew Price, FBM Holidays, GD Harries and Molson Coors sponsored Tenby United ended their league campaign at home on Saturday with a superb bonus point win over Llandeilo. With the championship still very much up for grabs, it was down to the Seasiders to get a bonus point win in order to get the maximum five league points needed to keep them in the race. It wasn't as simple as that, though, because even with being on the same league points as Gorseinon at the top of the section and losing less games throughout the seaon than the Swansea outfit, Gors had won a game more and the United needed local rivals Haverfordwest to do them a massive favour and either win their home game against Gorseinon or prevent them getting a bonus point in order for the Tenby side to get automatic promotion as champions. With Tenby's veteran winger Dai Meyrick scoring his side's first try after just five minutes, it looked like there would be a repeat of last week's drubbing of Llandeilo. The winger's touchdown came when a brilliant move from the home side's backs saw the ball moved through the hands quickly allowing fullback Damo Miller to beat two defenders before releasing Meyrick to canter in from the 22 for the unconverted score. This gave the Seasiders the start they needed, but despite trying to launch repeated attacks at every opportunity, Tenby wouldn't manage to cross the whitewash again for another half-an-hour due to the weather and a few nervous errors. Llandeilo's Celfyn Davies narrowed the deficit on the half-hour mark with a well-struck penalty, but it was in-form United fullback Miller who gave his side the boost they needed just before the interval when he galloped into the corner for the unconverted try, rounding off a very well executed move from the threequarters to give his side a 10-3 lead going into the half-time oranges after a solid first half which saw them attack and defend equally as well. With reports coming from Haverfordwest that it was going the Seasiders way and their local rivals were leading Gorseinon at the break, it was still all to play for. The Tenby side, which has matured considerably throughout the season under the leadership of second row Chris James, knew that they had to dig deep, and not worry about what was going on 20 miles away and just focus on the job in hand. Whatever skipper James along with coaches Gareth Thomas, Sion Brace and Ossie Boswell said to their squad at the break certainly worked as they came out and found form straightaway and fininshed the game and the league season in style, notching up four more tries and easily securing that all-important bonus point. The die-hard Seasiders followers didn't have to wait long as Toby Smith, who has played exceptionally well in the centre alongside fellow giant Jack Price, broke free and made inroads into Ravens territory before unleashing dangerous winger Jack Guerreiro, who beat the defence on his way in for a fine try, which outside-half Jonathan Rogers gladly converted. Then, within two minutes of his first score of the game, Guerreiro found himself scoring a carbon copy as Smith again broke free with a powerful run before sending the Mediterreanean winger in for the touchdown which, this time, went without the extras, but still secured the bonus point for United. Now with their tails up and backs running quality ball courtesy af the hard-working pack of Tenby forwards, the Seasiders began to dominate all areas, with the lineout working well along with a strong scrum, which meant that scrum-half Will Crockford could get good, clean ball away to the backs, and it was from just such ball that Crockford was able to put Smith in for a deserved try after a well-worked switch by the number nine put the centre in for the touchdown, which Rogers converted. With the changes being rung and fresh Seasiders legs on by way of Nicky Guymer, Roy Osborn, Scott Payne and Dan Colley for Rob Fairlie, Luke Dedman, Johnny Palmer and Dai Meyrick, who had all given 110 per cent to their side, Tenby looked to put the game to bed and this they did in style following a touch of genius from Toby Smith. When quick ball, secured as always by the Tenby pack, was sent like a missile by Crockford out to Rogers, it looked like the overlap was on and that simple passing through the hands would end in the score, but Smith had oher ideas and when he saw Damo Miller speeding down the touchline he put in a superb crossfield kick for the fullback to latch onto for a teriffic try which was equally as well converted from the touchline by Rogers. This put an end to a deserved victory for the Tenby side who have done themselves and the town proud week in week out all season, and although a little disappointed that Gorseinon had narrowly beaten them to the title by coming through their game in Harford with a very hard-earned bonus point, they are still confident on reaching their goal of promotion to division one this season, but they will just have to do what they're all used to by now and go the hard route to their goal by way of a play-off against a side who ended up in ssecond place in one of the three other third divisions. The play off will be on a neutral ground and it's likely to be in midweek around May 12. This will be confirmed shortly. Please make sure you follow the boys wherever they have to go to play and give them your support. If interested in going to the play-off game, please call in to the club and express your interest and a supporters bus can be arranged should there be enough demand.
