Young cricketers from Saundersfoot and Sageston schools represented Pembrokeshire at the Welsh regional finals of the England and Wales Cricket Board Kwik Cricket competition recently.
The schools aquitted themselves well against teams from Carmarthenshire, Glamorgan and Powys.
Both schools made the trip after coming out on top in the Pembrokeshire round held at Haverfordwest Cricket Club.
Organised by Sport Pembrokeshire, the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council and sponsored by Valero Pembroke Refinery, 11 schools competed on a day that was re-arranged due to weather related postponements.
Kwik Cricket is tailored for children up to the age of 11 with the emphasis on enjoyment and fun.
Taking part on the day were Cleddau Reach, Croesgoch, Glan Cleddau, Golden Grove, Hook, Pembroke Dock, Puncheston, Sageston, Saundersfoot, Stepaside and St. Marks.
There were some key games in the group stages with Saundersfoot beating the much-fancied Hook, Stepaside beating Glan Cleddau and Cleddau Reach beating favourites Sageston in a game that went to the last ball.
There was little to chose between the teams in the semi-finals with Saundersfoot beating Cleddau Reach 242 runs to 240 and Sageston beating Stepaside after scoring 247 against their opponents’ 242.
Honours went to Sageston in the final after they overcame Saundersfoot’s challenging score of 259.
At the Swalec Stadium, Sageston played schools from Carmarthen, Neath ,Maesteg and Porthcawl winning two and losing two.
Saundersfoot played schools from Pontyclun, Llanishen, Brecon and Pontardulais winning three and losing one.
Overall winners were Penarth who beat Carmarthen in the final making it four wins on the trot for the South Wales side.
