On the Saturday, there were three races run back-to-back and the overall winner was regular Coppet Week entrant Chris Martin with crew Tim in his Merlin Rocket, while the best of the three SSC members was Simon Turnbull in his Contender finishing an excellent ninth place overall out of a fleet of 37.
On Sunday, Tenby ran their annual round Caldey race for both cruisers and dinghies which attracted 33 dinghies, including six SSC boats and eight cruisers, including two SSC boats, in quite a fresh breeze which increased considerably as the fleet went through Caldey Sound and on the exhilarating reach down the back of the island.
The dinghy race was won by another Coppet Week regular pairing of Keith Macdonald and Andy Brittain in their Fireball who revelled in the blustery and choppy conditions, while the first SSC dinghy was again Simon in an excellent fifth place with Ben Roberts finishing 11th in his Laser Radial, another excellent result in a fleet full of performance boats, and James Hayden coming 15th in his Phantom.
The cruiser race was hotly contested and eventually won by Billy Stubbs and team in Apatshe, so well done to them, while the two SSC boats had a ding-dong battle all the way round with the lead changing hands several times, but on the last leg, the dinghy racing crew on Dizzy just nipped through Ray, Tom and crew on Spartacus finishing only 30 seconds ahead on corrected time.
A big thanks to Tenby Sailing Club for putting on another great event enjoyed by all with visitors coming from far and wide to take part in what must rank alongside Coppet Week as one of the best dinghy sailing events in this part of the country. The results are posted on our dinghy page in case anyone wants to check them out.
Away from the racing, congratulations to our own Ben Roberts who has secured a place on Challenge Wales as part of the Tall Ships Race and will be travelling to Finland in July to take part in what will surely be a great experience, so well done Ben.
This weekend club racing will resume on Sunday with two races starting at the very leisurely time of 12.30, under the control of Alan and Martin. Hopefully, this spell of unsettled weather will have passed through and let’s hope we have another good turnout.
