Race report
Sunday, July 31: The first two races of the late season points series were held on a lovely Sunday afternoon with sunshine and gusty winds attracting a magnificent turnout of 16 boats our highest of the year so far and including some of our newer recruits from the highly-successful sail training week which finished last Friday. The two races were superbly run by Malcolm and Carol, while on safety were Nina and Rosie, plus Tom and Terry.
Race one: The first race saw a very fast reach to start with Simon on the Contender and James in the Phantom, plus the flying RS200 careering around with the blue gennaker to the fore pulling out a good lead on the rest of the fleet, however, the slower boats were not deterred and gradually pulled up to the leaders with the eventual winner being Dave in his Solo followed by Ben in the Laser Radial just ahead of Simon but pretty close overall with just 50 seconds between the first five boats. There were some interesting moments throughout the fleet in the gusty conditions and a few close encounters between Hywel ‘he-man’ Jackson in his armless wetsuit and a variety of others, including our own membership sec, but a cracking race was enjoyed by all.
Race two: The course stayed the same, but this time we used the harbour start. First away were Ben and Lloyd in the Radials, closely followed by Aled in his Topper, while the faster boats tried to pick their way through. The wind had shifted slightly making it a broader leg to start so some good gybing practice for the 200 in particular as they zig-zagged their way towards Amroth. However, once round the mark, this made for a cracking close reach to Monkstone followed by a beat back to the harbour. This time, some of the fleet did the full four laps, and after all the scores were calculated, the winner this time was Aled in his Topper followed by Ben and Simon. Again good close racing throughout the fleet and the newcomers acquitted themselves well again.
Next racing we have just the one race due to the tide starting at 10 am, with Tom Owen in charge as OOD.
Club social
On August 28, we have the lady/junior helm which is always well-contested and not to be missed. We also have on that evening a great social event happening in the club which starts with the Tenby Male Voice Choir, around 5 pm, and to follow the excellent band called the Shambolics which entertained us all earlier in the year starting around 8 pm with times to be confirmed. Keep watching Facebook and website for details.
Sail training
The sail training week last week was a great success and seems to have produced some very keen new members which is all good for the club and was well-organised by Jo who has obviously put a lot of effort into organising the week for everyone. There were of course a host of other helpers - Malcolm, Ben, James and Alison Roberts, Hywel, Fin, all of the Mammatts etc so a big thank you to everyone it could not happen without you.
