Sailing Programme

The new season sailing programme is now up on the notice board, on the website and has been distributed by email and presents exciting opportunities.

The club championship for dinghy sailors comprises three series - Warm Up, Mid Season and Late Season providing a total of 41 individual races to competitors.

In addition, the Frostbite Series continues through to December offering a further ten races for the hardy enthusiasts.

Within the Championship, there are at least 15 special trophies to be won for individual or groups of races and for different dinghy classes and other special categories as well as the cups for overall placings based on all races sailed. The silverware inducements for competitors are very impressive having been built up over the 60-plus years of the club.

Dinghy sailors of all levels can also participate in club sailing sessions on various Tuesdays which it is hoped will encourage novice sailors particularly, to appreciate the fun of the sport.

A number of open events are also available to dinghy sailors, including Coppet Week which is celebrating its 60th year, Saundersfoot Regatta and Tenby SC Regatta.

A Round Caldey Race is planned for cruiser sailors and other outings for cruisers will be organised depending upon the weather opportunities through the season.

The fast-growing kayak section of the club has no formal programme of outings but opportunities for group paddling events can be developed as the season unfolds.

The club will also be hosting a meeting for the top youth sailors in South Wales - the CYRCS - when the Best in the West will compete as fiercely as only youngsters can in Optimists, Toppers and an Open Class. This is always an event worth experiencing!

Backing up all the water-based action will be the clubhouse events and involvement in village organised activities, so all in all providing members with a fantastic range of options throughout the year. Against these opportunities the basic membership fee of just £20 looks amazing value (best to keep this away from the attention of the committee - they will be putting the prices up!)

For readers who are not members - juniors, adults, families - you are all welcome. For more information go to http://www.saundersfootsailingclub.org.uk">www.saundersfootsailingclub.org.uk

The season officially gets underway with the Welcome start of season supper on Saturday, April 6.

Darts

Tonight (Friday), we are at home against Cresselly Cricket Club who may well be good at cricket, but are also near the top of the darts league - so sharpen your arrows everyone.

Six Nations Rugby

The hymns and arias planned for last week's Wales vs Ireland game descended into 'hmmms and aaaaahs' especially in the first half! Hope was restored for the nation in the second half and fingers are crossed and daffodils firmly clenched for this Saturdays game against France. KO at 5 pm with all the action on the big screen in the club together with half time refreshment and value drinks from the bar. Families and friends welcome.

Welcome Start of Season Evening

Woops! In last week's newsletter, we stated that MoJo and Mo were entertaining us at the Fitting Out Supper on April 6. Our social secretary has obviously been at the wine again and got booking dates mixed up. Unfortunately, they are not able to appear that evening as stated, but will be with us at Coppet Week so we all have some cracking entertainment from them to look forward to - just a bit later than we said. Apologies for the confusion and any inconvenience.

Sail Training

Time to book in for initiation into the sport or training for sailors at all levels. Contact Paul Johnson at [email protected]">[email protected] or (01834) 814145.

Wordology and Maintenance Help

The club is in urgent need of some painters - can you help? The nautical dictionary defines a painter as the rope attached to the bow of a boat for tying it up - but does anyone know the origin of the term? However, it is the human form of painters we need to help re-decorate some of the club using brushes and rollers. Does anyone know the possible origins of such help? Please lend a hand (plus arm and rest of body) and contact Rob on (01834) 814424 or [email protected]">[email protected]

Membership

Renewals are now overdue and new memberships very welcome. Application forms are available in the clubhouse and on the website - http://www.saundersfootsailingclub.org.uk">www.saundersfootsailingclub.org.uk

Website Quiz

Rolfe's new quiz on the website is now accessed really easily with a simple 'quiz' button. Last week's winner of the tide height question was John Griffiths who will surely be pleased to explain the answer and buy you a pint at the bar to celebrate! This week, there are questions on penalties and blasts to entertain both dinghy and cruiser sailors. Anyone can have a go - so get surfing!
