SAUNDERSFOOT 87 (14 pts.) FIVE ARCHES 66 (0)
Saundersfoot played the first of two home games in four days on Wednesday last week and returned to winning ways with a 21-shot win over Five Arches, of Tenby. Only five shots separated the sides at the halfway mark, but the second half belonged to the villagers who took all the spoils from the game, gaining the maximum 14 points. Rink scores with Saundersfoot first and Five Arches skips only were: Alan Brace, Adam Hensman, Joe Dennis, John Dugmore 23; Ashley Hooper 15. Neil Hensman, Mike Ashbridge, Paul Blayney, Steve Dick 19; Gerald Hewitt 16. Roy Kennion, John Amos, Brian McKehon, Steve Poole 27; Ray Taylor 20. Nev Ruff, Doug Silcox, Ken Davis, Myrddin Dennis 18; Steve Williams 15.
SAUNDERSFOOT 106 (14 pts) WHITLAND 64 (0)
Playing their second game of the week last Saturday, Saundersfoot gained the maximum 14 points again by defeating Whitland by the handsome margin of 42 shots and in the process lifted themselves to fourth place in the Pembrokeshire County Bowling Association Division One league table. Both sides were missing key players, but it's the players on the day that count and from the off it was Saundersfoot who seized the initiative to lead by 22 shots at the tea interval. Showing no mercy in the second half, the final scoreline was ample revenge for the defeat at Whitland earlier in the season. Rink scores with Saundersfoot first and Whitland skips only were: Nev Ruff, Ken Davis, Brian Desmond, Myrddin Dennis 22; Nigel Davies 12. Alan Brace, Adam Hensman, John Dugmore, Joe Dennis 25; Dan Jenner 20. Roy Kennion, Tommy Nutt, Brian McKehon, Steve Poole 31; Colin Wynn 12. Neil Hensman, Mike Ashbridge, Paul Blayney, Steve Dick 28; Steve Reese 20. There is another home game for the team tomorrow (Saturday) when Castle, of Haverfordwest, will be the visitors, the match starting at 2 pm. The St. Issell's men's team are at home on Sunday when top-of-the-table Fishguard and Goodwick will be the visitors.
Saundersfoot ladies
Saundersfoot Ladies continue to lead the ladies league table after a six-point win away at Tenby on Saturday. The game was close throughout and could have gone either way on both rinks, but it was the Saundersfoot team who dug deep and came out on top. Captain for the day, Angela Roberts, Kath Williams, Viv Edwards and Marion Evans beat Helen Baggott's rink 21-13, while Anne Evans, Elaine Shaw, Diane Disney and Ceris Hewlings finished 23-16 ahead of Alison Redman's quartet.
ST. ISSELL'S LADIES 43 (5 pts.) PICTON LADIES 31 (1)
The ladies of St. Issell's defeated their counterparts from Picton in Haverfordwest last week by 12 shots, helping to consolidate their mid-table position. Beryl Lawrence skipped her rink to a 25 shots to 13 win over Ann Thomas, whilst captain Beryl Lewis drew with Pam Langdon 18-all. The girls can have a short break now, with their next game being on August 2 at Whitland. Would the St. Issell's ladies please note that due to the Whitland carnival, this match will start at the earlier time of 11 am.
WINDSOR PENARTH 104 SAUNDERSFOOT 108
For the first time in many years, the ladies and gents of the Saundersfoot club travelled outside the county for a friendly match last Sunday. Normally hosting this type of encounter, this was a pleasant change and with a bus booked, everyone set off for Cardiff Bay. With the sun shining, everyone enjoyed a few hours there sampling the food and of course, getting liquid refreshment. Then it was off to Penarth with Paul Blayney navigating as he was the only one who knew where the green was and Phyllis the driver needing some help! A wonderful welcome awaited the team with the Windsor club acting as perfect hosts and after the game, which was played in an excellent spirit and with much laughter being heard across the rinks, everyone was treated to homemade bara brith and Welsh cakes, although not many took up the offer of tea or coffee, as the bar was doing a roaring trade. On the way home, after Paul had negotiated Phyllis safely back to the M4, the usual suspects at the back of the bus sang a few Max Boyce songs to conclude what had been a most enjoyable excursion. The result of the game was a secondary consideration, but for the record, the rink scores were: Christine Ball, Dennis Ball, Ken Davis, Neil Hensman lost 11-21. Mike Oliver, Christine Harries, Roy Kennion, Mike Ashbridge won 21-11. Kath Blayney, Kath Williams, Mike Carr, Paul Blayney drew 20-20. Lyn Statters, Peter Williams, Adam Hensman, Joe Dennis won 20-19. Audrey Williams, Anne Bradley, Billy Glynn, Barrie Lee lost 16-20. Sandra Iggerson, Alan Rich, Dennis Reed, Nev Ruff won 20-13. A win then by four shots, although both captains insisted that the result was a draw, which I think suited everybody! Thanks to Nev and Roy for sorting out the team, Mike for being bus conductor, Neil for acting as captain and Paul for arranging the game.
