LADIES OPEN TWo-WOOD TRIPLES COMPETITION

The ninth annual Ladies Open Triples competition, for the Kath and Paul Blayney Shield, took place last week. Thankfully, the weather remained fine and a full day's bowling was enjoyed by all the entrants, who played group games which were followed by the knockout stages. The first semi-final was between the Jackie Church-led Pembroke Dock team and Christine Harris, Brenda Davies and Di Disney from Saundersfoot, which required an extra end before the Dock ladies emerged as the winners. The second semi was a more one-sided affair, with Win Howells and her team from Haverfordwest defeating Olga Evans from Carmarthen. The final was played over eight ends and in an exciting contest, Win, Mary Richards and Mary Codd defeated Jackie, Collette Bethwaite and Cynthia Edwards by 10 shots to seven to win the trophy for the first time. Kath Blayney presented the finalists with their prizes and thanked club vice-chairlady Diane Rigden and the ladies who had provided meals and refreshments throughout the day. Kath also thanked the umpire Fred Rogers, those who had donated raffle prizes, her husband Paul for organising the day's bowling and all the ladies who had entered for making the event a success.

ST. ISSELL'S 92 PATER 49

The St. Issell's men's team entertained Pater, of Pembroke Dock, in a mid-week Brains Cup group game and ran out convincing winners by 43 shots. On rink two, George Cavell, Peter Williams, John Arman and skip Ken Davis defeated Steve James by 26 shots to six, picking up a seven along the way. Rink three saw a much closer affair, before Stew Howe, Peter Satterthwaite, Brian McKehon and Mike Oliver ran out winners by 19 shots to 13. Don Poole skipped Dennis Reed, Bob Storey and John Haig on rink four and gained the top rink prize with a 34 shots to eight scoreline. The only loss on the night came on rink five where captain Billy Glynn, Don Pope, Mike Carr and Barrie Lee were defeated by 22 shots to 13. The next group game takes place next Wednesday when the team travel to play Borderers, of Whitland. Before that, on Sunday, they return to league action when they again play Pater, this time away at Pembroke Dock.

FIVE ARCHES 57 (2 pts.) SAUNDERSFOOT 93 (12)

Following their win over Pendine the previous Saturday, the Saundersfoot team travelled the short distance to Tenby to play recently promoted Five Arches in a mid-week fixture and returned home victorious after a 36- shot win. Eight shots up after five ends became a lead of 20 by the halfway point and thereafter the result was never in doubt, with only two points being dropped as John Rees, Steve Davies, Neil Dickinson and Gerald Hewitt, of the Arches, defeated Steve Poole. Rink scores with Saundersfoot first and Five Arches skips only were: Alan Brace, Mike Ashbridge, Joe Dennis, Berwyn Dennis 29; Dai Spencer 12. Graham Hughes, Nev Ruff, Adam Hensman, Myrddin Dennis 23; Ray Taylor 10. Roy Kennion, Mike Gouldingay, Brian McKehon, Steve Poole 14; Gerald Hewitt 24. John Haig, Paul Blayney, Neil Hensman, John Dugmore 27; Ashley Hooper 11. CASTLE 69 (4 pts.) SAUNDERSFOOT 83 (10)

Playing their third away Pembrokeshire Division One league game in eight days, the Saundersfoot boys continued their winning streak last Saturday by defeating Castle, of Haverfordwest, by 14 shots. Rink two saw the biggest win of the day, with Myrddin Dennis skipping Nev Ruff, Tommy Nutt and Brian Desmond to a 33 shots to six win over Haydn Davies. Captain Berwyn Dennis, accompanied by Graham Hughes, Adam Hensman and John Dugmore, found the going tough on a difficult rink three and were defeated by Mike Codd, 23 shots to 18. John Haig, Paul Blayney, Neil Hensman and Steve Dick were convincingly beaten on rink four, only winning five ends to lose by 25 shots to six. Up against Daniel Jones, Peter Lewis, James Davies and Barrie Absalom, whatever the villagers did was bettered on the day and the back two of teenager James and the wily Barrie in particular produced a masterful display of bowling to which the Saundersfoot boys had no answer. Rink five saw the other winning rink, with Roy Kennion, Mike Gouldingay, Brian McKehon and Steve Poole defeating Castle captain Rob Jones by 26 shots to 15. Saundersfoot entertain Haverfordwest tomorrow, the match starting at 2 pm.
