FISHGUARD AND GOODWICK 74

ST. ISSELL'S 82

St. Issell's started a busy programme of three games in seven days with a visit to the north of the county to play Fishguard and Goodwick who last season had been relegated to the second tier of the Pembrokeshire Bowls League.

Eight shots up after the first five ends, the margin remained the same at the halfway point, but after 15 ends the villagers' lead had been extended to 18.

A strong finish by the home team led to a nail-biting finish, but St. Issell's held on to win the game and pick up nine of the 14 points.

On rink two, Dave Roberts led for skip Barrie Lee, with Mike Ashbridge second and Brian Deeley third and, although drawing after 13 ends, eventually lost out to the Davo Hughes's four by 21 shots to 16.

Rink three saw George Cavell, Graham Roberts, Neil Hensman and Roy Pring have a close battle, with the lead changing several times and the eventual outcome was honours even at 17 each.

Stewe Howe skipped on rink four, aided by Edward Smith, Don Pope and Brian McKehon against Mike Barringer.

Things looked good in the early stages with a five shots lead, but back came the home team to run out winners by the narrow margin of 24 shots to 22.

It was on rink five that the overall match was won, with John Haig, Malcolm Young, Roy Kennion and skip and captain Bill Glynn gaining an impressive win over Tom Jones by 27 shots to 12.

PATER 83 ST. ISSELL'S 78

Two days later, the St. Issell's boys were on their travels again, although this time only the short distance to Pembroke Dock to play Pater.

Any hopes of another win, however, against the team propping up the table were dispelled with a five shot defeat and a reward of only two points.

Rink scores with St. Issell's first and Pater skips only were:

Edward Smith, Don Pope, Brian McKehon, Stew Howe 28; M.Hyde 18.

John Haig, Mike Oliver, Bill Glynn, Mike Carr 17; S. John 19.

Dave Roberts, Mike Ashbridge, Brian Deeley, Barrie Lee 17; B. Duncombe 23.

George Cavell, Graham Roberts, Neil Hensmen, Roy Pring 16; Steve James 23.

ST. THOMAS 66

A home game last Saturday proved the oft quoted comment that bowls is a funny game when, entertaining St. Thomas of Haverfordwest who had decisively beaten them twice this season in the league and the Brains Cup final, St. Issell's gained some measure of revenge with a 22-shot win and 12 points. Leading by just eight shots at the tea break, a strong second half performance gave the team their second win of the week and dented the visitors' promotion hopes.

Rink two saw George Cavell, Graham Roberts, Alan Brace and Roy Pring six shots down at the halfway point, but then a winning run of eight ends, during which they picked up 18 shots, put them in pole position and they ran out winners by 27 shots to 15.

On rink three, Dave Roberts, Mike Ashbridge, Brian Deeley and Barrie Lee were the only losers, going down by 24 shots to 12.

Stew Howe skipped Edward Smith, Don Pope and Brian McKehon to a second successive win, with a 24 shots to 14 victory over Phil John on rink four.

Only leading by two shots after 11 ends, here, as on rink two, the boys went into overdrive after that and picked up 16 shots without reply to open up an 18-shot lead.

Eight shots conceded, however, at the end reduced the winning margin to 24 shots to 14.

On rink five, John Haig, Mike Oliver, Bill Glynn and Mike Carr started by taking a nine-shot lead after just three ends against Lyndon Frayling and eased to a 25 shots to 13 win.

SAUNDERSFOOT MEN

The Saundersfoot Division One team played two games last week and were beaten on both occasions. Away in a rearranged fixture at Haverfordwest, the villagers were soundly beaten, with only two points gained from the rink skipped by Berwyn Dennis.

Last Sunday at home to Pendine, although leading by two shots after 10 ends, a poor second half led to an 18-shot defeat and only one point from a drawn rink.

Rink scores from this game, with Saundersfoot first and Pendine skips only were:

Roy Kennion, Tony Wheeler, Brian Desmond, Myrddin Dennis 19; Dave King Thomas 20.

Alan Brace, Paul Blayney, Graham Hughes, Joe Dennis 15; Arwel Edwards 24.

Dennis Reed, Mike Oliver, Dave Roberts, Brian McKehon 20; Mal Evans 20.

Nev Ruff, Malcolm Young, Neil Hensman, Steve Dick 14; Stuart King Thomas 22.

Saundersfoot Ladies

Saundersfoot ladies played two recent games, both at home, with mixed results.

The full quota of six points was gained against Milford with a 27-shot win.

Captain Angela Roberts, Steph Amos, Viv Edwards and Marion Evans won with a 25 shots to nine score, while Ann Evans, Christine Harris, Alwen Hughes and Lorna Bissell achieved victory by 27 shots to 16.

Playing fellow title contenders Whitland last Monday evening, the team suffered only their second reverse of the season, losing the match by just one shot.

Two points were gained from Marion Evans's usual rink, winning by 27 shots to nine, while Sue McKehon, Joyce Howe, Alwen Hughes and Gemma Amos were defeated by 27 shots to eight.

St. Issell's Ladies

St. Issell's ladies played a rearranged home game last Monday afternoon against Tasker of Haverfordwest, winning on one of the two rinks, but losing on the other, to finish with two of the six points in a 10-shot defeat.

On rink two, captain Kath Blayney, Chelsea Baskerville, Beryl Lawrence and skip Sue Roden had a close game against Janet Price, Jackie Goodland, Lyn Hoad and Mandy Lewis and won by the narrowest of margins with a 14 shots to 13 scoreline.

Rink three saw Lyn Statters lead for skip Beryl Lewis, with Brenda Davies second and Audrey Williams third.

After 12 ends, a lead of three shots over the Wyn Howells quartet gave cause for optimism, but counts of two fours and a six to the visitors in the latter part of the game led to a 28 shots to 17 defeat.
