SAUNDERSFOOT 90 (14 pts.) CASTLE 60 (0)
Saundersfoot continued their rise up the Pembrokeshire Division One league table last Saturday with an emphatic 30 shots win over visiting Castle, of Haverfordwest.
Having lost by just one shot in the corresponding away fixture at the start of the season, the villagers were looking for a better result on their home patch and succeeded in winning on all four rinks to pick up the maximum fourteen points.
Brian McKehon skipped Edward Smith, Dennis Reed and Dave Roberts on rink two and scores were level on 12 ends against the visitors skipped by Tommy Nutt. Winning the next four ends, however, opened up a nine-shot lead for Saundersfoot and despite a late comeback by the Castle four, Brian's boys eased home with a 22 shots to 17 score line.
On rink three, Alan Brace, Grant Hughes, Paul Blayney and captain Don Poole were always in front against Bill Hall and with the help of a five on end number 13, eventually gained a 23 shots to 15 win.
Steve Dick, with Roy Kennion lead, Mike Oliver second and Brian Desmond third, had a close encounter on rink four against the Castle rink skipped by Dave Summers. With scores tied with one end remaining, the village rink withstood the pressure and picked up a three to win by 16 shots to 13.
Rink five saw 18-year-old Joe Dennis skip Nev Ruff, Neil Hensman and Graham Hughes and in a slow start the visitors, skipped by Barrie Absalom soon took a six-shot lead. A take out shot by Joe on the ninth end, led to a count of five and began a run of seven winning ends to retrieve the situation and open up an eight shot lead. The Castle boys fought back to reduce the deficit to three after eighteen ends, but the home rink stepped up a gear and picked up 11 shots over the remaining three ends, including a count of six, to register the top win of the day by 29 shots to 15.
Two rearranged mid-week games next for Saundersfoot, both away, to Whitland and Haverfordwest, before they play their next home game against Pendine on Sunday August 5.
BRAINS CUP FINAL
St. Issell's played St. Thomas, of Haverfordwest, last Sunday in this year's S.A. Brain-sponsored cup final at Whitland, the home of county president Colin Wynn.
Falling behind by 20 shots at the half-way mark, the villagers fought back to reduce the lead to single figures, but a strong finish by the holders of the last two years led to a deserved St. Thomas victory.
Two rinks, skipped by Stew Howe and Roy Pring, were victorious, but there were defeats for those skipped by Brian Deeley and Barrie Lee.
Nevertheless, it was an achievement for St. Issell's to get to their first final and the experience should hold them in good stead for future campaigns.
Thanks should go to the Whitland club for their hosting of the event and providing refreshments and a mouth watering barbecue throughout the hot afternoon.
Ladies meeting
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the ladies meeting, due to have been held on Monday, August 6, has been rescheduled to Monday, August 13, at the same time of 6 pm.
