SAUNDERSFOOT 92 (12 pts.) FIVE ARCHES 65.75 (2)
Saundersfoot played a mid-week Pembrokeshire League Division One home game against newly-promoted Five Arches, of Tenby, and gained the double over their opponents by a notable margin, picking up 12 points to move themselves comfortably into mid-table.
On rink two, Brian McKehon skipped Mike Oliver, Dennis Reed and Dave Roberts and following their win the previous week against Tenby, gained another success, although it was a close run thing against the Arches four of John Rees, Joe Hewitt, Ken Lloyd and skip Tony Brown. A poor start saw them eight shots to two down and they were still six shots adrift after 11 ends. The deficit was four with five to play, but picking up 10 shots over the next three ends put them six in front. Tony's boys were not about to lie down, however, and duly picked up a count of five to make it a nervy last end which saw the home rink take one shot to give a 20 shots to 18 win.
Rink three saw Alan Brace, Adam Hensman, John Dugmore and skip Steve Dick eight shots adrift after 14 ends and a late fight-back just failed to give them victory, losing out by the narrowest of margins, 22 shots to 21.
On rink four, Myrddin Dennis, with Roy Kennion lead, Nev Ruff second and Roy Pring third were up against a triples skipped by young Ben Simmons and, although the visitors won by three, playing one man short meant a statutory 25 per cent reduction in their score to give another home success by 20 shots to 17.75.
On rink five, Saundersfoot had their own youngster skipping in Joe Dennis, who with Graham Hughes, Barrie Lee and captain for the day Neil Hensman, restricted their opponents, led by Ray Taylor, to winning only six ends in a resounding 31 shots to eight win.
The villagers have now gained 28 points in their last three games and were due to play their next one last night (weather permitting as this will be the third time they have tried to play it) away to Whitland.
FISHGUARD LADIES 24 SAUNDERSFOOT LADIES 44
Saundersfoot ladies travelled to Fishguard and gained success on both rinks to return home with the maximum six points.
Marion Evans skipped her rink to a four-shot win, whilst Lorna Bissell's four were always in control over Ann Newbury to win by 16.
PICTON LADIES 23 SAUNDERSFOOT LADIES 44
The Saundersfoot ladies were on their travels again last Sunday when they travelled to play Picton, of Haverfordwest.
The result was another six points gained in their quest to retain their league title, scoring another 44 shots to their opponents' 23.
Marion Evans and girls won by 13 against Pam Langdon, and Lorna Bissell had an eight-shot win over Ann Thomas.
FIXTURES
As part of their 50th anniversary celebrations, the gentlemen of Saundersfoot play the Welsh Bowling Association president's team next Monday in an eagerly awaited game which starts at 2 pm.
Before that, today (Friday) both St. Issell's teams are in home action at 6 pm, with a men's game against Borderers, of Whitland, and the ladies also playing their counterparts from the Carmarthenshire club.
On Tuesday, the St. Bride's boys play a Meyrick Owen game away to Brunel, of Neyland, whilst on Wednesday, St. Issell's men entertain Fishguard.
Thursday sees Saundersfoot ladies play another away match, this time against Pembroke Park.
COUNTY FINALS
Tomorrow (please let it be fine!), the men's county finals take place at Whitland, the home of this year's county president, Colin Wynn.
Saundersfoot will be represented in the triples final by the family trio of Joe, Myrddin and Berwyn Dennis, who will be up against the Tenby trio of John Roberts, John Baggott and Mike Jackson.
Joe also plays in the Under 18 singles final when he will be up against one of Tenby's youngsters, Ben Cloake.
In the over 60s categories, Graham Hughes plays the defending champion Mal Evans, of Pendine, in the singles, whilst Stew Howe and Brian McKehon take on Pat Currie and John Baggott in the pairs.
The best wishes of all the members go to our finalists and to all the participants for a good day's bowling.
It will be worth a trip to see the matches, not only to support the players, but to sample the carvery which is being prepared by Dave Jenner and co.
Other refreshments will also be available throughout the day.
HOSPITALISED
Life member Mary Cavell has recently had a short stay in hospital and is wished a speedy recovery from all at the club.
John Morris has also not been well, necessitating hospitalisation and he, too, is sent the best wishes of the members for better health in the future.
