LADIES OPEN TRIPLES COMPETITION

The Kath and Paul Blayney Two Wood Open Triples competition took place last week, with entries from Pembrokeshire and Carmarthen taking to the green for a full day's bowling.

Fifteen teams were split into three groups on a round robin format, with the winners and best runner-up proceeding to the semi-final stage.

Kath Blayney, of Saundersfoot, partnering Jo Shewry and Cally Jones, of Whitland, reached the final by defeating the Pam Langdon trio from Haverfordwest, while Angela Roberts, Lorna Bissell and Marion Evans, of the home club, were victorious over fellow club members Steph Amos, Sue Roden and Gemma Amos.

In an exciting final, it was Kath, Jo and Cally who emerged the winners to repeat their success of two years ago.

The presentations were made by club chairman Paul Blayney, who thanked his wife Kath for organising the event and all the other ladies of Saundersfoot who had helped make the day such a success.

Umpire Fred Rogers was also thanked, as were all the competitors who supported the event.

PENDINE 71 (12 pts.) SAUNDERSFOOT 68 (2)

Saundersfoot travelled to play Pendine last Saturday for a Pembrokeshire Division One league game and just failed to win by the narrow margin of three shots.

Three days previously, Pendine had defeated Haverfordwest away, taking all 14 points in the process, and so the villagers knew how difficult a game it was going to be on a notoriously tricky green, a task made all the harder as they were missing two regular skips.

It was Saundersfoot who started the brighter and after five ends they had taken a 12-shot lead.

At the halfway point, the lead was 19 shots, but back came the home team, who reduced the deficit to just four after 18 played.

Pendine edged into a one shot lead with one end remaining, and in an exciting finish, left the villagers again losing out by a narrow margin.

The best performance came from 18-year-old Joe Dennis who skipped a rink in the absence of Uncle Berwyn, who was trying to earn a living somewhere out in the Bristol Channel!

With Mike Oliver as lead, Neil Hensman second and Graham Hughes third, the rink raced into a 15 shots to nil lead over their opponents, skipped by Mal Evans, and eventually won by 11.

Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Pendine skips only) were:

Mike Oliver, Neil Hensman, Graham Hughes, Joe Dennis 26; Mal Evans 15.

Nev Ruff, Adam Hensman, Alan Brace, Steve Dick 18; Dave King Thomas 19.

Dennis Reed, Mike Carr, Paul Blayney, Brian Desmond 13; Stuart King Thomas 19.

Brian McKehon, Dave Roberts, Roy Kennion, Don Poole 11; Arwel Edwards 18.

FIXTURES

Next Wednesday sees the second specially arranged golden jubilee celebratory game take place at the club when the ladies of Saundersfoot play host to the president of the West Wales Ladies Bowling Association's team.

This weekend, there are two mixed friendlies at the green, with Page Park Bowling Club of Bristol the visitors tomorrow and Cowbridge the opponents on Sunday.

On Tuesday, the Meyrick Owen boys continue their campaign with a home game against Cromie, whilst Saundersfoot ladies are also at home to Pendine.

On Thursday, St. Issell's ladies also play Pendine at home and Saundersfoot men's team travel for an evening game against Whitland.
