SAUNDERSFOOT v COUNTY PRESIDENT'S SELECT TEAM

In the first of five specially arranged matches to celebrate their golden jubilee anniversary year, Saundersfoot played host to a representative team from the Pembrokeshire County Bowling Association, captained by this year's president, Colin Wynn, of Whitland.

On a rainy day, which was exactly 50 years to the date of the official opening of the green on May 9, 1962, the weather did not dampen anyone's spirits and an enjoyable afternoon, curtailed to 10 ends, was enjoyed by all.

Everyone then enjoyed a splendid meal prepared by the wonderful ladies of the club, followed by the Saundersfoot captain Don Poole giving a short history of the club, listing team and individual achievements that had been made by members both on and off the green.

He then made a presentation of a team photograph, which had been taken before the game and prepared and framed by club member Susan McKehon, and club tie to president Colin and county secretary and this year's Welsh Bowling Association junior vice-president, Gerard Thomas.

Colin then replied, wishing the club success for the year and the future, before making his own presentations to Don, club president John Evans, chairman Paul Blayney and long-serving treasurer George Cavell.

It's the turn of the ladies for the next anniversary game when this year's president of the West Wales Ladies Bowling Association, Mrs. Jackie Church, of Pembroke Dock, will bring an invited team to play the club on Wednesday, June 13.

PEMBROKE DOCK LADIES 36 SAUNDERSFOOT LADIES 23

Saundersfoot ladies team travelled to play their counterparts from Pembroke Dock, but were defeated by 13 shots, picking up just one of the six points at stake.

Marion Evans skipped captain Angela Roberts, Steph Amos and Viv Edwards to a 17-all draw against Diana Davies's four, while Anne Evans, Alwen Hughes, Gemma Amos and skip Lorna Bissell were defeated by Jean Morgan by 19 shots to six.

WHITLAND LADIES 35 SAUNDERSFOOT

LADIES 38

Last Saturday, the Saundersfoot ladies returned to winning ways when they took on the ladies of Whitland and won a close encounter by three shots, picking up four points as a result.

Anne Evans, Alwen Hughes, Gemma Amos and Lorna Bissell lost out narrowly to Diane Scourfield by the narrowest of margins with a score of 22 shots to 21, while Angela Roberts, Steph Amos, Viv Edwards and Marion Evans secured the win by defeating Andrea Thomas by 17 shots to 13.

WHITLAND 83 SAUNDERSFOOT 80

Playing the club's first Carruthers Shield game of the season, Saundersfoot travelled to Whitland last Saturday and lost a thrilling encounter by just three shots.

Leading by nine shots at the halfway mark and six after 15 ends, Saundersfoot began to sense a notable victory, but back came the home team to lead by four going into the last end.

Despite some heroic efforts by the villagers, Whitland just hung on for the win.

Rink scores (Saundersfoot first and Whitland skips only) were:

Roy Kennion, Mike Carr, Nev Ruff, Steve Dick 23; Colin Wynn 27.

George Cavell, Brian McKehon, Barrie Lee, Stew Howe 10; Nigel Davies 25.

Graham Hughes, Neil Hensman, Joe Dennis, Berwyn Dennis 22; Dan Jenner 16.

Alan Brace, Paul Blayney, Brian Desmond, Don Poole 25; Glyndwr Thomas 15.

HAVERFORDWEST CASTLE 76 (12 pts.) SAUNDERSFOOT 75 (2)

Returning to league action on Sunday, Saundersfoot travelled to play Castle, of Haverfordwest, and suffered their second agonising defeat in two days, this time by just one shot.

As on Saturday, the villagers led by nine shots at the tea break, but this had been reduced to just three after 15 played.

On 20 ends, although the rinks finished at different times, the scorecards showed a lead to Saundersfoot of four shots, mainly due to the rink skipped by captain Don Poole, but a net loss of five shots at the death meant heartbreak again and another feeling of what might have been.

Rink scores (Saundersfoot first and Castle skips only) were:

George Cavell, Paul Blayney, Brian Desmond, Myrddin Dennis 9; Gareth Jones 22.

Alan Brace, Neil Hensman, John Dugmore, Don Poole 32; Barry Absalom 9.

Roy Kennion, Mike Oliver, Nev Ruff, Steve Dick 17; Neil Crawford 24.

Graham Hughes, Bob Storey, Joe Dennis, Berwyn Dennis 17; Rob Jones 21.

Due to Carruthers commitments, the team do not play a league game again until June 2, when they travel to Pendine.

ST ISSELL'S 79 (4 pts.) PEMBROKE DOCK

PATER 87 (10)

St. Issell's played their second league game of the season on Sunday and were defeated at home by Pater, both teams winning two rinks, but the visitors winning overall by eight shots.

Rink scores (St. Issell's first and Pater skips only) were:

Graham Roberts, Ian Nicholls, John Haig, Brian McKehon 19; M. Hyde 22.

Billy Glynn, John Austin, Mike Carr, Roy Pring 19; J. Russell 15.

Dennis Reed, Grant Hughes, Dave Roberts, Brian Deeley 26; R. Duncombe 16.

John Bingham, Mike Ashbridge, Don Pope, Barrie Lee 15; Steve James 34.
