Last weekend, Tenby Swifts Under 13s played a home game at Heywood Lane against a touring team from Ebbw Vale. As a premiership club, the home side were expecting a very tough test against the boys from the valleys, and so it proved.
The first half was mostly all the away team as their uncompromising forwards dominated the young Seasiders. Three tries were only cancelled out by a fine worked try by the Swifts resulting in Iori scoring in the corner to leave the half-time score at 21 points to five to the away side.
The second half saw a change in fortunes as the home side began to cope with the much bigger away pack and began to win some ball for the backs to put pressure on the valleys boys. This led to two well-worked tries being scored by powerful finishes from Dylan.
The away side, seeing their lead cut to one score, attacked the home line, but superb defending by the whole team kept their line intact for the second half.
But with time running out they couldn’t quite mount another attack and the game ended with the young Swifts losing by 21 points to 15.
A very stern test, but great spirit was shown by all the Seasiders to run the visitors so close. The away coaches were full of praise for the Tenby boys for their defensive effort and skill shown in attack against a much bigger side.
Players shown in photo along with the visitors were Will P, Max H, Kyle, Josh, Cameron, Jake, Ollie, Iorri R, Cairan, Freddie, Joe, Dylan, Iori B, Fletcher, Tristan, Will A, Ethan and Alex, along with team mascot Iolo.
UNDER 11s
Last Sunday, Tenby Under 11s travelled away to Crymych to take them on in the quarter-finals of the cup.
The home team started as predicted by applying the pressure from the first whistle and this resulted in a quick opening converted try.
Both sets of forwards work rates were impressive and, although the Seasiders defended hard, it was Crymych who turned their pressure into points as they crashed over for a second try.
This was the point in the game where Tenby’s strength of character shone through
A ball secured by Jack gave the backs the chance to move it quickly and a determined run by Connor saw him cross in the corner to close the score to 14-7.
With the first half coming to a close, Tenby’s backs used a final opportunity to create some space for Alfie and his speed and strength were too much for the Crymych defence as he crashed over to score and make it 14-all at the break.
Crymych were to break through first, though, after the interval and take the lead once again.
Tenby’s backs tried hard to put some runs together to create space and gain some much-needed territory, but it was the hosts once again who seized the opportunity to cross for their fourth try.
Crymych quickly built on their momentum and crossed for three more tries to make it 49-14 at the full-time whistle.
Tenby captain for the morning was Lewis and the team would like to thank everyone who travelled for their support.
UNDER 10s
Last Sunday saw Tenby Swifts Under 10s travel to Llanelli to take part in The New Dock Stars Festival. Conditions were ideal for an afternoon of fast flowing rugby.
First up for Tenby was Gowerton B team. Tenby got off to a slow start conceding a try in the first two minutes. Slowly but surely Tenby came back into the game and got the score level through a fine try by Thomas Prince. A tough game first up, but some excellent defensive work by Madoc, Ethan Lewis, Ollie Tucks and Evan Christen saw Tenby get the draw
Second up for Tenby was a game against Builth Wells. After the slow start in the first game, Tenby hit the ground running in this. Some powerful running by Bennett close to the Builth Wells try line saw him pop the ball to Ollie Tucks, who crashed over the line. The next try came soon after when slick handling from Rhys Barnes and George Mcdonald saw Ethan Wright going over in the corner to make it 2-0.
Watertight defence from Tenby saw Builth Wells struggle to get a foothold in the game and two tries from Locan Hall, after again some quick hands from Lucas Haditch and Jack Henson, made it 4-0 to Tenby, who seemed to be going from strength to strength.
Third up was Llangennech. Another comfortable win for Tenby with great attacking play from Max, Bennett and a gutsy performance from Jack Henson resulting in tries from Thomas Prince, George Mcdonald (2) and Rhys Barnes.
Also just one try conceded in three games goes to show the work all these boys put in at training has paid dividends in the defensive side of the game.
Last up for a now rampant Swifts side was a tough game against Gowerton A team. Neither team had tasted defeat in the festival and Gowerton had not lost a game since the Under 7s back in 2016. Safe to say that Tenby were up against it.
After a cagey first few minutes, it was clear that neither team was willing to give an inch. Gowerton broke through the Tenby line and were unlucky not to go over in the corner.
This was the kick into action Tenby needed. More powerful running from Bennett and Tucks saw space open up out wide and Logan took advantage of this to get the first try of the game.
Great attacking play by all the team saw Logan go over again right at the death. This capped a fine win for Tenby.
Squad: Madoc, Ethan L, Ethan W, Ollie Tucks, George Mc, Evan, Lucas, Max, Bennett, Thomas, Rhys, Logan, Jack, Caitlyn Lewis (mascot)
Thanks go to all the parents who travelled for the support they gave throughout. Well done to all the boys who helped Builth Wells out to make up their numbers so that each and every child could enjoy and play and New Docks Stars RFC for hosting a well-organised and accommodating festival. We really enjoyed, thank you!
UNDER?7s
On Sunday, Tenby Under 7s hosted Fishguard at the Clicketts ground. The glorious sunny morning made for a great display of rugby from both sides. This was the fourth time of playing the opposing side this season, so Tenby knew they were in for a tough match and Fishguard did not disappoint.
It was a high scoring match, with both sides showing excellent team skills, passing the ball well and joining together in defence to grab some amazing tags.
Try of the match had to come from Dylan who ran almost the whole length of the field before touching down.
Tenby came out the winners, scoring 13 tries to Fishguard’s 11. A real pleasure to watch!
Man of the match went to Jude for his excellent three tries. Big welcome also to new team member Rhys!
Team: Caitlyn Lewis, Rupert James, Dylan Drewett, Jevan Guymer, Jude Christen, Craig Roberts, Rhys Broadhurst, Rhys Barrellie, Ethan Brace, Bobby Waters, Bobby Field-Thomas.
Tries: Jude (3), Rupert (2), Ethan (2), Bobby FT (2), Craig (2), Jevan, Dylan.
