Last Sunday, after weather had led to a number of cancelled games, Tenby Under 10s travelled away for a round-robin against Pembroke and Pembroke Dock Quins. Even in the freezing cold conditions, Tenby were ready to kick-start their season again and were also excited to introduce two new team members in brothers Alex and Alfie W.

First up against the Seasiders were Pembroke. Tenby were to make an impact from the kick-off with the forwards securing the ball and possession moving along the back line to Connor who was too quick for the Pembroke defence and crossed for the opening try. Pembroke responded with some strong play which saw them apply pressure to the seasiders defence and push Tenby back onto their own line and eventually push over to equal the score. Tenby from the restart displayed some quick hands and good control to get the ball out once again to Connor who crossed quickly for his second. Both teams defences were working hard and the forwards were battling strong for the ball. A turnover on the floor by Rocco would give possession back to the seasiders and allow Alfie to run at pace at the Pembroke defence and create the space to cross the try line. This was quickly followed by a repeat display by Alfie who just before the half time whistle seized the opportunity to put his foot down and run at Pembroke once again to score the Seasiders forth try. Half-time score 20-5 to Tenby. The second half started with the forwards battling hard to gain possession. A pick up and surge forward by Owen brought play up field and eventually it would be Lewis who would take the opportunity to power over the try line for the first try of the second half. The next try opportunity would fall to the Seasiders when some lovely running by the back line would find Jack with ball in hand and presented with a gap to dive over and score. From the restart, Pembroke attempted to swing the momentum their way but a steal from Lucy would provide Rowan the chance to side step his way round the Pembroke defence and to run the length of the pitch to score. Pembroke were next to add to the try count with their second of the game. The Seasiders would reply with some quick hands and a lovely individual run by Connor to cross for his third. But in a game in which both teams continued to battle, Pembroke again replied quickly with another try and their third of the day. Both teams were playing good rugby but the seasiders would take advantage next after a loose ball saw them reclaim possession and play pushed Pembroke back onto their own line. This was to allow Alfie W with the chance to score his debut try for the Seasiders. Tenby continued to build on this pressure with the forwards once again showing great determination to push Pembroke back and this resulted in Rocco being presented with a gap to cross the try line. In the last few minutes of the game, Tenby continued to run the ball at every opportunity and this would lead to Rhys linking with Alfie to put Alfie over for his third of the day just as the full-time whistle blew. Full time score 55-15 to Tenby.

Tenby were to remain on the pitch to play Pembroke Dock Quins straight after. Cold hands and tired feet weren’t going to stop the Seasiders from coming out firing from the first whistle. A lovely run by Connor took play up field and put the pressure on the Quins straight away and would allow Lewis to quickly open the try count by crossing over in the corner. Tenby built on this with continued pressure. Some strong forward work would see Alfie W have a strong run down the touchline and set up Lewis to score his second. Momentum for the Seasiders was building nicely and a lovely run by Rhys from the restart would see play quickly move back down field and Connor cross the try line once again. Tenby forwards continued to do what they do best securing the ball and applying the pressure. Moving forward, Tenby were controlling the ball and this would allow Owen to create some space through a determined run and see him cross the line for Tenby’s fourth. The next opportunity would come from turnover ball at the restart, Jayden secured the ball enabling the Seasiders to get possession out wide to Alfie who sliced his way through the Quins defence and run the length of the field to score a beautiful try. Tenby were in full control of the game. They were retaining possession well and this would soon mean Lewis was gifted the space to go on a strong run to score in the corner. Just as half-time approached, Rowan seized a last chance opportunity to score by running a lovely line to cut through the Quins defence to cross for a try. Half-time score 35-0 to Tenby. From the restart, the Quins came out strong and were to cross for their first try of the game with the first play of the second half. Tenby replied straight away with Alex winning possession back and allowing the Tenby backs to get the ball out wide to a waiting Connor who crossed over the try line. The Quins had found a second surge this half though and were themselves quick to answer Tenby’s try with a second. Tenby kept their heads though and continued to apply the pressure once again. Play would soon be push up onto the Quins line and it was Rowan who was to spot a gap in the defence to nip over the try line. With some big tackles going in, Tenby kept focused and a strong run from Rowan took play up the field and Connor was soon to cross for another try. The Quins once again came at Tenby with a response and another try for themselves and both teams were creating some lovely opportunities. The next one came for the Seasiders, quick hands and some impressive running angles would see Tenby crossing for another try this time for Louie. Yet again Quins hit back with some strong runs of their own and eventually powered over the line for their forth try. As the clock ticked down, there was still time for the Seasiders to finish strong. A solid display by the forwards allowed a platform for the backs to spread the ball and Connor to score and this was quickly followed by Lewis ending the game as he had started crashing over the Quins line to score once more. Final score was a win for the Seasiders 65-20. Well done to all players, two well earnt wins.
