PEMBROKE Under 17s played against Crymych last Thursday evening at Tenby in the Mike Fry Cup Final, in pleasant, dry conditions, ideal for running rugby.
Both teams started well, with both packs testing each other early on at the set piece and in the loose.
Pembroke kept their opponents under constant pressure throughout the half, scoring two very well taken tries; whilst Crymych also built some very solid phases of play scoring a late try to trail 7-17 at the break.
The second half saw a drop in intensity and control from the Pembroke squad, which Crymych took full advantage and put Pembroke under pressure with some adventurous plays, forcing Pembroke to defend, which they did very well on numerous equations to repel an eager Crymych.
Crymych scored a well-taken converted try to get within three points.
Late in the match the Crymych skipper chose not to kick a penalty to even the score line, instead they went for a lineout option, but were again repelled by a determined Pembroke defence and so missing their opportunity. Pembroke held out and deservedly won the trophy to the delight of their coaches and large travelling support.
