AFTER a long enforced break due to cancelled league and cup matches, a development squad game cancelled due to storms, the first XV two weeks ago managed to play a friendly in Aberaeron, prior to travelling to take on Teirw Crymych last Saturday.
In dry, very windy conditions both teams were very keen to gain a much needed league win.
Crymych were very quick out of the blocks and after multiple phases in the visitors half, finally pierced a determined defence for the first, unconverted try of the game.
The visitors settled to their task and came back strongly; a penalty was kicked to the corner, where lineout ball was secured allowing the forwards to drive and score a well deserved try to square the score.
Five minutes later a defensive error allowed the home sides forwards to build another concerted attack and quick ball allowed their centre to score unopposed.
After a short period of stalemate, the visitors dominant scrum, after concerted pressure and multiple penalties in the home twenty two, paved the way for No 8 Rogers to pick up and crash over to level the scores at the break, thanks to a marvelous touchline conversion by Sherratt.
Five minutes into the second half Crymych went uncontested, taking away Pembroke’s advantage at the set piece.
Then against the run of play, Crymych ‘s backs pounced on a loose ball in Pembroke’s half and scored a converted try.
The visitors’ forwards were combining well with their backs and excellent ball retention gave them a purple patch during which they scored two really well constructed converted tries in seven minutes.
The home side replied with a converted try to level the scores in this pulsating half; then with minutes to go the home side’s forwards were penalized and Sherratt landed a marvelous 40-yard penalty to give his jubilant side a well deserved victory in what had been an extremely entertaining match, in front of a very large, appreciative crowd.
