The first game after Christmas was away to Fishguard, unfortunately I didn’t make it to the match, but was reliably informed by everyone that our players were fantastic, using their skills well and managing to get a full-time score win of 3-2.
Most improved award went to our lovely Ellis Phillips for being superb on the pitch, and the star player award went to the fantastic Scott, for his all round exceptional performance. Well done both!
January 24 saw us away to Carmarthen Athletic, our favourite team in the league, and thankfully a match indoors as we have been unable to play so many fixtures due to the inclement weather affecting out pitches.
Taking advantage of the chance to play, the teams played four smaller games, with Ellis J and Leo scoring two fantastic tries. Unfortunately, the final score was a loss for us of 8-2 to Athletic, but every child on our team had a brilliant morning.
We were quite low on numbers for these matches so five extremely sportsmanly players from Athletic donned some Otters blue and played for us, tacking their opposing team hard and running fast. We are very grateful to Daniel, Ben, Benji, Ethan and Celt for taking it in turns to help us out - you all played really well.
Most improved player for these matches went to one of our smaller players, who really got stuck in and tried hard, tackling well and running strong - Mo! Well done buddy, you were fantastic.
Star player award went to a player who was brilliant in the game, tackling, passing, offloading, organising the team and scoring a try - Ellis J, excellent job mate, you were outstanding.
This week, a dry Sunday and a match away to Milford was on the cards.
Coach Rob and our fantastic Otters made their way to the fantastic Milford Under 9s and their coach David, hoping to have a great morning of rugby with some fantastic views thrown in for free.
Kicking-off and captain Morgan was very good at organising his team into their line and getting them to run up onto the Milford team quickly. When Milford had the ball out, the Otters found it quite difficult to defend against them, but Scott, Leo, Ellis Ph and Harry tried really hard and managed to stop a few tries and turn over the ball to our advantage.
Ellis J managed to get our first points on the board with a cracking try running from half-way.
Both teams played brilliantly and batted through the mud, with Milford team making use of their number two player, passing him out to him and allowing him to score.
The half-time break saw our mighty Otters in the lead. In the team talk, coach Rob made sure to tell the team that they needed to keep going and make sure to not be afraid, get in and tackle even the biggest players and make sure to offload before the tackle completes.
Starting the second half, the otters managed a try from the the first whistle, a tremendous way to start the next ten minutes. Ela had clearly listened to coach Rob, as she had two fantastic runs up most of the pitch length, but seeing she was about to be tackled, offloaded to her team mates allowing them to score - fantastic team work and great rugby skills.
The final whistle blew, with very happy Otters winning the match 7-4.
Most improved player award this week simply had to go to one of our original boys, who had one of the greatest runs in this match, who always has a smile on his face and who showed that he has been listening and learning in training - Harry! Well done mate, well deserved!
Star player award was a very hard decision this week, as so many of the players performed brilliantly, but on looking at this lads skills, determination and try scoring, it had to go to Ellis J! Fantastic job Ellis, you were brilliant in every area.
Our special ‘team player award’ that is only used when someone has been outstanding for the team, showed itself again this week as coach David from the Milford team and coach Rob had both noticed how instrumental this player had been in helping the team to victory - Ela! Terrific game, fantastic team work and we are very proud of you, da iawn ti!
Thanks also to coach Sonny for giving out the awards.
Big thanks to everyone at the lovely Fishguard Rugby Club, to the fantastic coaches and players at Carmarthen Athletic, especially the boys mentioned above, to coach David and Milford Under 9s for hosting us and playing a fantastic game of rugby and, as always, to coaches Rob and Mick for training and preparing our team, our wonderful ‘NeeNaw’ Lynne who always looks after our players, Joanne, our chief photographer for all the lovely photos, the team for being ‘Simply The Best’ and the parents for braving the elements.
