Pembroke Dock Quins 26 pts.
Neyland 3
The Quins made eight changes from the previous week’s home defeat by St. Clears and it paid dividends as they ran out worthy winners in their last home game of the season, completing the double over their near neighbours.
The Pembrokeshire ‘All Blacks’ put pressure on the Quins straight from the kick-off,and after an indiscretion by the hosts, scrum-half Mark Riley put over a 30-yard penalty to give his side the lead with only two minutes gone.
The lead, however, did not last very long, as five minutes later, Quins flanker Barry Parsons powered over for his third try of the season.
Outside-half Lewis Davies slotted the conversion to put his team 7-3 in front.
The Quins were dominating territory, but could not force a score. Left winger Jake Griffiths was causing the visitors major problems every time he had the ball, making ground at will, but it would just not click for his side as they failed to capitalise on their territorial advantage.
It took the Quins right up to the end of the half before they registered their second try.
A penalty put into the corner by in form outside-half Davies put the visitors under pressure.
A fine lineout take by flanker Stefan Halward set up a maul reminiscent of a Quins bygone age, which enabled number eight Kevin Bratcher to touch down for his fourth try of the season.
Davies converted with a magnificent kick from wide out considering the conditions and on the wrong side for the left-footer.
The Quins, with a 14-3 lead, were truly in the box seat as the second half started, even though they were playing into a cold northerly wind. Neyland, however, were making life difficult with some stern defence.
Another fine break by Griffiths set up centre Jack Price, who needed all his pace and power to touchdown in the corner for his ninth try of the season.
Davies missed the difficult conversion, and it was now all about whether the Quins could force a bonus point.
With 15 minutes left, the hosts’ fourth try arrived when centre Thomas Doyle made ground before Parsons, with a well-timed pass, sent second row Alex Pierce in for his second try of the season.
Davies added the extras, and the Quins then seemed content to sit on their bonus point win as Neyland tried hard to force a late consolation score, but it came to no avail.
Quins fielded: Damien Miller, Paul Jonkers, Thomas Doyle, Jack Price, Jake Griffiths, Lewis Davies, Jason Scarfe, Sean Willington, Neil Brace (capt), James Gardener, Alex Pierce, Mark Van Rhyn, Barry Parsons, Kevin Bratcher and Stefan Halward. The Quins are home to Whitland in the Pembrokeshire Youth Cup, which will be played either tomorrow (Saturday) prior to the England v Wales game or on Sunday, with the date and kick-off time still to be confirmed.
