Pembroke Dock 20 pts. St. Clears 0
The Quins in their last game of 2013 put in their best performance of the season against a formidable St. Clears side, who dominated in both territory and possession for large parts of the game.
The Quins could not have wished for a better start when after just two minutes left wing Damien Miller latched on to a superb grubber kick from outside-half Tom Lewis to score in the corner.
For good measure, the outside-half converted with a fine kick.
The Saints, after suffering this early shock, started to test the Quins' defence with some powerful running from centre Daffyd Page and second row Daffyd Winter, but the Quins, as in the previous week, tackled superbly, with second row Jake Osbourne in particular outstanding.
The Quins' lineout was also going well, with Mike Davis and Joe Powell back in harness providing good ball for scru- half Ade Heath.
On 15 minutes, the Quins struck again. Just as the visitors thought they were getting a foothold, another fine grubber kick from Lewis was once again pounced on by Miller, who this time fed supporting centre Chad Meyer, who scored a fine try in the corner.
Lewis missed the difficult conversion.
As the half drew to a close, another strong run from Meyer set up another score for the Quins.
The ball was quickly recycled to Lewis, who struck a perfectly judged 35-yard drop goal to push the Quins into a 15-point lead, which ended the scoring for the first half.
The second half started with the bad weather which had been forecast starting to influence procedings.
Again the visitors started to threaten the Quins and indeed would have scored a certain try had right wing Chris Pickerskill not dropped the ball with the line at his mercy.
The Quins, with Lewis relieving the pressure with some fine wind-assisted line kicks, were still putting in another fine defensive display.
On the hour, the Quins struck again when Lewis kicked for right wing Adam Cawley, who caught it superbly in the dreadful conditions and set off on mesmerising run which surely would have ended in a try had he not lost his footing, but he was still alert enough to offload the ball to supporting centre Dai Rees, who, with a powerful run, made vital yards before passing to Miller, who with a superb inside ball sent outstanding second row Jake Osbourne over in the corner.
Lewis, not surprisingly, missed the conversion as conditions were deteriorating by the minute.
For the last 10 minutes, the weather, which was the worst in living memory, arguably denied the Quins a bonus point try.
The Quins can now hopefully look forward to a better New Year, having gone 110 minutes, including the back end of the match at Pontyates, without conceding a point.
The Quins' next league fixture is away to near neighbours Llangwm on January 4.
