PENDINE 80 (8 pts) PEMBROKE DOCK 75 (6)
Having lost at home to Pembroke Dock and needing an improved performance, Pendine went onto a lovely bowling surface on a warm dry day. Rink one saw Arwel Edwards's four against Dave Buchanan's rink and after five ends Pendine were 4-1 up and after 10 ends 6-8 down and a close game continued being 12-12 at 15 ends and nip and tuck until the end, with Pembroke Dock winning 19-15. Rink two had Stewart K.T.'s lads up against Reg Thomas's four. Stewart's rink shot out of the blocks to be 9-4 up at five ends, 17-7 after 10 and, winning seven of the last 11 ends, went on to win 31-14, laying down a useful foundation for the other rinks. Rink three saw another close encounter, with David K. T.'s four against Richard Jones's lads and at five ends Pendine were up 9-1, with Jamie Shields and Dave Bosier finding line and length well, and at tea were 17-7 up. After the break, though, the jack length altered and Pembroke Dock were back to 17-17 at 15 ends and went on to win 22-20. Rink four saw Mal Evans up agaist against Brian Dowling's four, with Tudor Harries lead, and the Dock were 6-1 up after five ends and 15-2 up at tea. Thereafter, Mal's lads dug deep and won eight of the last 11 ends, losing only by six shots and thus helping the overall score in Pendine's favour. Rink scores (Pendine first) were as follows: D. James, A. Collinge, E. Davies, A. Edwards 15; H. Williams, K. Bireshence, B. Cale, D. Buchanan 19. R. Truelove, D. Stewart, C. Rance, S. King Thomas 31; G. Harris, J. Carroll, T. Hall, R. Thomas 14. J. Shields, D. Bosier, G. Hale, D. King Thomas 20; D. Finn, H. James, K. Edwards, R. Jones 22. R. Davies, D. Roberts, M. Dix, M. Evans 14; T. Harries, R. Taylor, R. Hissey, B. Dowling 20.
PENDINE 95 (14 pts) WHItlAND 61 (0)
Pendine were without two of their regular skips, David and Stewart KT, but they were ably replaced by Mal Dix and Jeff Hale and, with a re-arranged team, they shocked everyone with a superb performance at home. Rink two had Jeff Hales's four against the young guns of Whitland, skipped by Liam Price with third Matthew John, and at five ends it was 2-3 to Whitland, at 10 six-11, but Jeff's lads were very resilient and won eight of the last 11 ends to succeed 19-17. Rink three saw Arwel Edwards up against John Rees's quartet, with Whitland up 7-5 at five ends and 11-9 at 10, but then Arwel's four won most of the ends remaining, picking up a four and three 3s in the process to win 28-16. Rink four had Mal Dix's lads against Steve Reese's four and Pendine won eight of the first 10 ends to be 12-5 up and also won seven of the next 11 ends to run out 22-10 winners. On rink five, Mal Evans's boys were against Colin Wynn's four and Pendine were 16-7 up after 10 ends. They traded ends thereafter, but winning by 26-18 provided a clean sweep for Pendine on all rinks. Rink scores (Pendine first) were as follows: C. Thomas, J. Shields, R. Gosnold, G. Hale 19; D. Morgan, J. Noble, M. John, L. Price 17. D. James, G. Lewis, E. Davies, A. Edwards 28; A. Thomas, B. Wood, A. Reese, J. Rees 16. R. Truelove, D. Stewart, C. Rance, M. Dix 22; D. Jenner, D. Richards, C. Morse, S. Reese 10. P. Leeds, D. Roberts, A. Collinge, M. Evans 26, G. Morse, D. Thomas, E. James, C. Wynn 18.
PENDINE 79 (4 pts) HAVERFORDWEST 80 (10)
On Thursday evening last, Pendine played top-of-the-league Haverfordwest instead of on the Saturday, as Haverfordwest were playing in the Welsh Carruthers Knockout Competition at Cwmbran on that day (which incidentally they won). Therefore, back in Pendine, a big challenge was on, and on rink two Mal Evans's rink was against young Chris Court's lads. At five ends Pendine were 8-2 up and at ten 13-7 and stayed focused to win 26-16. Rink three saw Arwel Edwards's four against Richard O'Leary's unit and Arwel was 4-5 at five ends, 11-5 up at ten, 17-11 at 15 and ran out 22-15 winners. On rink four, Mal Dix's four met P.D.S. Jenkins's quartet and Pendine were up 9-2 after five and 13-5 after ten, 17-13 at 15 ends, but then lost out on the last six ends to go down 18-20. Rink five saw Stewart KT's rink against Gareth Barrett's four and this was close at 15 ends, 10-12, but Pendine lost out on the remaining ends, especially on the last end when Stewart got shot with his last wood, having been five down at the time, but skip Gareth elected for the take-out shot with his last and did so to count six shots. This made the scores level across the board with one rink left on their last end and Haverfordwest holding one shot. DKT at third just missed the take out by centimetres, as did skip Mal, and Haverfordwest won overall by one shot (what drama, pain and joy). Rink scores (Pendine first) were as follows: P. Leeds, D. Roberts, D. King Thomas, M. Evans 26; D. Latham, A. Wills, T. Thomas, C. Court 16. D. James, A. Collinge, E. Davies, A. Edwards 22; A. John, M. Davies, M. Hughes, R. O'Leary 15. J. Shields, G. Lewis, R. Gosnold, M. Dix 18; G. O'Leary, K. Thorpe, A. Wilks, P. D. S. Jenkins 20. C. Thomas, D. Stewart, C. Rance, S. King Thomas 13; D. John, B. Jones, P. Jenkins, G. Barrett 29.
