The cricket world in Pembrokeshire is in mourning after the sudden death of a well-known player on Tuesday evening.

Meyrick Rowlands, a former Welsh international cricketer, was playing for Whitland Seconds against Carew Seconds, at Hook, in the semi-final of the Alec Colley Cup when he tragically collapsed and died.

A former headteacher of Pennar Community School, Mr. Rowlands, aged 60, had only retired from his post at the school on Friday.

As a mark of respect, the Harrison-Allen Bowl final between Whitland and Carew which was due to be played tomorrow (Saturday) has been postponed.

A statement on the County Club website said: "Following a request by Whitland Cricket Club, the county executive have agreed to postpone the Harrison Allen final.

"The final will now take place on Sunday, August 5.

"Due to the above, the Ormond Youth Cup final will now take place on Sunday, August 26."

Tributes have been paid to Mr. Rowlands.

Martin Cavaney, a school governor at Pennar Community School, said: "The whole school is deeply shocked and saddened by this terrible tragedy.

"It has only been a few days since we celebrated Meyrick's retirement and marked his contribution to the life of Pennar School and the community.

"Our hearts reach out to his family, his wife Angela, son Daniel and daughter Lisa, at this sad time."

A book of condolence is being opened at the school today (Friday) from 10 am until 12 noon. It will also be open Monday-Thursday next week, also from 10 am - 12 noon.

Speaking on behalf of Pembrokeshire County Council, cabinet member for education and Welsh language, Clr. Huw George, said: "Meyrick's colleagues in the education directorate and elsewhere within the authority are all devastated at the news of his untimely death.

"Generations of pupils who passed through his school will be sharing similar feelings.

"His contribution to education in Pembrokeshire over the years has been immense and will stand as testimony to his memory.

"The fact that he only retired last Friday after an outstanding teaching career, only adds extra poignancy to this dreadful event.

"We send our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family in their loss."
