Carew too strong for Narberth in Under 15s final

Carew U15s 143-4 beat Narberth U15s 95-3

Narberth won the toss and invited Carew to bat. They could not have wished for a better start, with captain Loui Davies bowling Rhys Grigg with the third ball of the game. With Rhodri Dyer keeping things tight at the other end, Narberth kept a close grip of the game in the first four overs.

It was then that the experience of the Carew batsmen with county players Morgan Grieve, captain, and Rhys Canton came to the forefront. They took the attack to the Narberth change bowlers of Cameron Pritchard, Josh Lewis and Jake Thomas, playing some excellent shots all around the ground. It was only an excellent piece of fielding by Loui Davies with a direct hit that saw Canton run out for 36 with the score on 89 in the 14th over. Shortly after, Grieve retired on a well-constructed 51.

However, there was no let up for the Narberth attack as Carl Thomas, 29, and Tudor Hurle, 16*, including one big six towards the football ground, took Carew to a big score of 143 for 4 in their 20 overs.

For Narberth, Loui Davies ended up with 3-14 , an excellent run out and he worked tirelessly in the field.

This was always going to be a big ask for the Narberth openers of Harry Rees and Loui Davies, who themselves played some lovely strokes, but with the Carew attack of Tudor Hurle 0-13 and Elliot Waters 0-15 keeping things tight, they were soon behind the run rate.

Rees, 18, eventually fell lbw to Carl Thomas. Davies (43) and Rhodri Dyer, 15, batted well, but fell to the bowling of Morgan Broomhall, 2-8, aided by two very good catches by Rhys Grigg and Tudor Hurle. Cameron Pritchard, 10*, continued the attack for Narberth, who finished on 95-3, which left Carew as deserved winners for an all-round team performance.

In the presentation after, Martin Jones (Junior organiser) thanked St. Ishmaels for hosting the final, the officials, Glyn Pawlett and Allan Hansen, scorers Kerry Waters, Richard Howell and Ed Pritchard, groundsmen Mel Williams and Chris Bradshaw. He also thanked Wendy Bradshaw and Pat Williams for laying on a tremendous tea for the players after the game.

He congratulated both sides on getting to the final, with both teams being a credit to themselves, their clubs and coaches and the way the game was played in a competitive manner, but in an excellent spirit and with good sportsmanship.

The plaques and runners-up shield where presented by Colin John, league sponsor, who was thanked again for his generous support of Pembrokeshire cricket.

It was also good to see the county chairman and his wife Paul and Janice Webb supporting the final.

The winners’ trophy was donated by the late Stan Richards and John Bowen family 43 years ago. In fact, over the 43 years, approximately 950 youngsters have played in the final, let alone those in the league games.

Continuing the family tradition, fourth generation Ollie Rees, aged 10, presented the trophy to the winning Carew captain, Morgan Grieve. It’s worth noting that young Ollie, himself a keen sportsman, played in the Under 11 final the night before for Hook CC.

Narberth team: Loui Davies (capt), Jamie Goldsworthy (wicket-keeper), Rhodri Dyer, Harry Rees, Cameron Pritchard, Josh Lewis, Ieuan Barnes, Jake Thomas, Brandon Williams, Lee Peters, Sam Davies, Jacob Roure.

Lawrenny turn tables on Hook in Under 11s final

Lawrenny U11s 271-6 beat Hook U11s 187-10 by 84 runs

This year’s final was between the top two sides in the Zone A section of the Under 11 League. Hook came through the semi-finals beating Whitland, while Lawrenny had a narrow victory against Kilgetty, who won Zone B and up to that game were undefeated.

In the league game, Hook beat Lawrenny by seven runs, but after winning the Under 11 finals for the last three years, they found the talented Lawrenny side in scintillating form. They raised their game and as a team were excellent in all three disciplines of the game, batting, bowling and fielding. On the night they were too strong for Hook and ran out worthy winners

The Under 11s is played under a pairs format.

Lawrenny captain Will Allen won the toss and invited his counterpart Dillon James from Hook to bat. Hook found runs difficult to come by, with Dillon James and Liam Miller top scoring with five each. Credit also to Troy Goodridge, Morgan Bowen and Oliver Haltram who remained not out after their four overs.

For Lawrenny, Charlie Arthur returned superb figures of 5-3, Oscar Lewis 2-3, with Noah Williams, Finlay Lewis and Rhydian Eynon picking up a wicket each.

Hook needed some early wickets, but the Lawrenny batting was positive from the start and, despite the best efforts of all the Hook bowlers, who did take wickets at regular intervals, the score mounted and there was always that cushion between the sides.

For Lawrenny, Charlie Arthur scored 13, Rhydian Eynon 10, Ethan Hall 8, Harry Morgan 7, Rhys Eynon and Finlay Lewis 6 each, with Oscar Lewis 5.

For Hook, Liam Miller, Dillion James, Bailey Goodridge, Noah Goodridge, Morgan Bowen and Oliver Rees all took a wicket each.

This left Lawrenny as deserved winners for an excellent all-round team performance. Amongst this there was one outstanding performance by Charlie Arthur, who top scored with 13 and took five wickets.

In the presentation after the match, Martin Jones (Junior organiser) thanked Haverfordwest Cricket Club and their groundsman Andy Williams for the hard work he had put in to producing an excellent surface; umpires Richard Scriven and Tony Pasternak for the way they conducted the game; and scorers Kate Chandler-Hall and Jon Willington for keeping every one up to date.

He also thanked Colin John, of Llewelyn Davies & Co Accountants, league sponsors, for his valuable and continued support for junior cricket, together with county chairman Paul Webb and his wife Janice for their support.

He congratulated both sides on getting to the final, with both being a credit to themselves, their clubs and coaches and the way the game was played in a competitive manner, but in an excellent spirit and with good sportsmanship.

Although Hook would have been disappointed on the night, they have some young players who we will no doubt see more of in the future.

Both clubs are lucky to have the calibre of coaches in Robert and Andrew who also coach Pembrokeshire County teams and they deserve all the support and encouragement they get for what is never an easy task and one they perform with distinction.

The medals and shields were presented by Colin John, league sponsor. Captain of Hook, Dillion James, picked up the runners-up trophy and for Lawrenny, captain Will Allen collected the winners’ trophy
