The annual Pembroke Dock Bowling Club Open Week took place recently at the immaculate Memorial Park green. Competitors in the three competitions battled for a place in the finals that were played on Friday afternoon in front of a good crowd of spectators.
This year, the clubs’ centenary tournament was largely blessed with fine weather. However, following a sunny Wednesday, torrential rain saw the green under water for most of Thursday.
Sudbury Bowl: The final saw 21-year-old Rhys Day of Tenby Bowling Club take on fellow club member Mike Jackson. Congratulations to Rhys on his excellent win. Rhys was making his debut in the tournament and played outstandingly well all week.
Alfred Phillips Bowl: The Blue Riband event saw Dave Kingdon (Tenby BC) battle with Daniel Bassett (Pembroke Dock BC). It was Dave’s greater bowling experience that won the day with commiserations to Daniel on being runner-up.
TRT Jones Shield: Players eliminated during the first few days of the tournament competed for the prestigious shield. The trophy was donated to the club by Hugh Williams as a tribute to his close friend and club stalwart Richard Jones who passed away last September.
The final saw a battle between Richard Morgan and Hugh Colley (both Pembroke Dock BC) with Richard receiving the shield from Mrs Evelyn Jones.
During the presentation ceremony, tournament organiser Haydn John-Davies complimented those who had made the week such a success.
Thanks were extended to the greenkeepers for preparing an excellent playing surface, the ladies who prepared refreshments, the bar staff and Umpires Mrs Collette Bethwaite and Richard Hissey.
Members then enjoyed a buffet and prize-rich raffle at the clubhouse. To bring the tournament to an end, Haydn and his helpers were thanked for their hard work in ensuring the tournament ran smoothly despite adverse weather conditions.
