ST. KATHERINES 63 (2 pts.) PEMBROKE DOCK
MARINERS 87 (12)
Winning ways returned for Mariners when they visited St. Kath's, of Milford Haven, last Saturday, after defeats at Fishguard and St. Thomas.
With only one short shower all afternoon, it made a pleasant change not to be running for wet gear every five minutes.
Gert Gelderblom's rink took the lead after the fifth end and continued with a good performance, taking a six at the 12th end, finishing 28-12 and taking the kitty.
Gerard Thomas's foursome had the hardest game. They trailed from the start, but fought hard to lose by only 10 shots, thereby helping the team to maintain a winning margin.
Dave Halward's rink had a steady start and continued to build a lead to finish 21-13. The only small hiccup was giving away a four on the 10th end.
Graham Bann's rink had yet another successful day. Despite trailing 7-9 at the ninth end, they recovered well, including a five on the 16th and finishing 24-14.
After the game, the Mariners' captain welcomed, to loud cheering, guest of honour Karl Bierschenk, who suffered a heart attack only nine days before.
Rink scores (Mariners first, St. Kath's skips only) were:
Bobby Taylor, Boyd Parry, John Arman, Gert Gelderblom 28; D. Mathias 12.
Keith Church, Reg Thomas, Graham Roberts, Gerard Thomas 14; P. Simpson 24.
Jerry Carroll, Arthur Kilshaw, Richard Caley, Dave Halward 21; K. Walker 13.
Alan Yea, Eric Dezille, Tony Spicer, Graham Bann 24; D. Hastings 14.
