Narberth 34 pts.

Llanharan 8

An excellent first half display by the Otters, especially up front by the Narberth pack, against a strong wind, set up this bonus point win over Llanharan, to keep the Otters in second place of the Championship table.

RGC 1404 have moved up to third place with a home win in North Wales over Bargoed and are five points behind Narberth in the table.

Inside the first minute, Otters scrum-half and man-of-the-match Rhys Lane scored a brilliant individual unconverted try in the left corner, to give the hosts the lead. He had picked up the ball from a ruck inside the Narberth half before racing up the left touchline.

He evaded defenders with some clever footwork and angular running to touch down for a try halfway out on the left.

The Dairymen struck back with an unconverted try by fullback Rhys Walker, who opened up a gap to cross the Narberth line.

Walker then put the visitors in front with a penalty kick from 35 metres, but the Otters had the last word before the interval when flanker Stuart Worrall scored an unconverted try after good work by the pack in the left corner.

Narberth had played very well against the wind in the first half, but gradually conditions worsened in the second half and the Llanharan players found it hard going with the rain and the wind driving into their faces.

The Otters took advantage with a four-try burst. The first try came in spectacular fashion from fullback Jonathan Morgan, converted by fly-half Ianto Griffiths. The fullback had used his acceleration off the mark to follow up a well placed chip ahead by Ianto Griffiths and dived on the ball to win the race for the line.

Then Rhys Lane had another eye-catching individual try in the right corner from the base of the scrum. Sensing the possibility of scoring, he ran diagonally towards the right corner to beat the Llanharan defenders to the line.

Ianto Griffiths added the icing on the cake with a conversion from the touchline.

Stuart Worrall then scored his second try of the match, following robust work by the pack, which went unconverted.

The Dairymen wilted under the continuous pressure to concede a penalty try converted by Ianto Griffiths before the final whistle.

Commenting after the match, Otters head coach Sean Gale said: "It was very pleasing to get a bonus point win against a good side like Llanharan and as the visitors tired Narberth played some superb rugby in difficult playing conditions.

"It was a very good performance against the wind in the first half after we decided to play against the wind on winning the toss.

"As the Llanharan players tired, we were able to play to our strengths by getting the ball in the corners for the driving lineouts. We also had the upper hand in the scrums.

"After a disappointing performance the previous week away to Bridgend Athletic, we had two good training sessions this week and the players adapted very well to put those moves and techniques into practice."

The Health Centre Balcony Suite match sponsors Vaynor Farm Ltd (Bill Ridge) selected Narberth scrum-half Rhys Lane as man-of-the-match. In a great team effort, there were also outstanding performances by flankers Stuart Worrall and Dylan Richards, young lock Adam Clarke develops more in each game, as does prop Owen Jordan.

Behind the scrum, apart from the phenomenal Rhys Lane, centre Steve Martin worked hard and wing Nick Gale always wanted to be involved.
