Narberth 24 pts. Cardiff Met 16

A rousing second half display enabled the Otters to end their five-match losing sequence and gain a win at home against a very strong Cardiff Met student team.

Ironically, the losing run started on Saturday February 9, in the away match against the same opposition.

The Students took the lead with a penalty by left-footed place kicker Matt O'Brien, the Cardiff Met fly-half. It was extended by a cracking try from his half-back partner, Rhodri Davies who broke clear outside the Narberth 22, to touch down under the posts 10 minutes later. Matt O'Brien kicked the conversion to put the visitors 10 points ahead.

An exchange of penalties by Matt O'Brien and Narberth wing James Russell maintained the differential, but a second penalty kick by Russell from 35 metres was also on target to reduce the gap before the interval.

In the second minute of the second half, Russell claimed his third penalty success and five minutes later the Otters took the lead for the first time when fullback Jonathan Morgan ran up the right flank in support to collect a cross-kick from fly-half Nick Jones and scored a try in the corner.

Russell converted from a difficult angle.

Midway through the half, another penalty by James Russell extended the lead and then five minutes into injury time, wing Will Lewis scored an unconverted try in the right corner to remove any remaining doubt about the result.

It was set up by the pack with a series of scrums and created when replacement scrum-half Adrian Killa made a break from the last of the scrums, before releasing the lively Lewis up the touchline from short range.

The performance of the Narberth team, particularly in the second half, delighted Narberth director of rugby, Jonathan Dodd. In his post match comments, Dodd said: "We were very pleased with the win and the boys played very well, with a top notch display by the Narberth pack.

"The back row players were outstanding in the second half when generally we were back to ourselves again. We want to retain this motivation to win until the end of the season."

The Health Centre Balcony Suite match sponsors Narberth Health Centre nominated Narberth wing James Russell as man-of-the-match and there were excellent performances by the four players used in the front row and number eight Steffan Phillips. Also the Narberth utility player Nick Jones showed his value to the team with a good all-round performance at fly-half, to set up a number of attacking movements for the backs.
