The Saturday Swingers of Tenby Golf Club embarked on their Annual Tour last weekend and they were blessed with much better than forecasted weather on both days.
The party was 25 strong and Cardiff was again the chosen base as the eclectic group tend to enjoy a diverse range of cultural activities and gastronomic delights, although many ended up in Chip Alley in the early hours as usual!
On Saturday, the first leg was played at Maesteg Golf Club in the Llynfi Valley. A strong south-westerly wind meant that scoring was not easy on a course which boasted lovely spring, mountain turf and undulating greens.
Nicky Allen led the way with an excellent 39 points and he was closely followed by debutant Scott Smith on 37 and Jerry Whitehouse on 35. However, there were various other Swingers still in contention with the average score being 31 pts.
Unsurprisingly, the scoring at Coed-y-Mwstwr (Whispering Trees) Golf Club, Bridgend, on Sunday was not quite as high, albeit it generally remained very creditable. Although not long, this is a pretty course with various tricky doglegs, mature trees, wicked slopes on the speedy greens and a too conveniently portioned clubhouse between the sixth and seventh holes!
Mike Anthony and Darren Thomas both came in with 34 pts, a good second leg score, but they were pipped by Austin Davies with a fine 35, which added to his 30 pts at Maesteg, gave him an aggregate of 65 and third place overall.
Mike Anthony's two rounds totalled 67 pts and claimed him the runner-up position, and for once a genuine reason to be in the photos.
Despite being cut from 16 to 13 for his second round, Nicky Allen still managed 29 pts at Coed-y-Mwstwr and thus his 36-hole aggregate of 68 pts saw him being crowned as Swingers Tour Champion for the first time. In a very emotional speech, he thanked his manager, coach, sponsors, family and barber.
