Over 200 Pembrokeshire youngsters have embarked on an innovative approach to hockey.

Two hundred and thirty pupils took part in a series of 4689 hockey festivals across the county - at Tasker Milward, Greenhill, Bro Gwaun/Fishguard and Pembroke astroturf pitches.

4689 is a new route into the sport for youngsters aged between seven and 13.

The format is not based on age, but ability, with the size of the playing area and team numbers gradually increasing as the children's talents improve.

Some players take part in competitions, while others are introduced to the sport via more fun, flexible activities, which were led in the festivals by young leaders from the four secondary schools.

Peter Lloyd, PE co-ordinator at Hakin Community School, said he was very impressed with the festival in Pembroke with over 80 children able to participate on the pitch.

Four schools - Goodwick Primary/Ysgol Wdig, Ysgol Brynconnin, Pembroke Dock Community School and Mary Immaculate School - will now compete in the Pembrokeshire 8's final on March 14 at Sir Thomas Picton School.

The winner of the Pembrokeshire final will travel to Newtown on March 21 for the national final.

Angela Miles, the hockey agent for Pembrokeshire, said she was very excited by the 4689 scheme and wanted to see all schools and clubs signed up to the new format.

At present, three fun centres have adopted 4689 - Tasker Milward, Tenby and Fishguard.

4689 Easter camps will also be held during the Easter holidays. For further details, contact Angela on 01437 776379 or 07920213651.
